Woke up at 4:50am today. Hooked up the Uhaul trailer and did 75mph to Boring OR. Pulled up at 8:30ish. When I got there, talked cruiser / 4x with a couple guys that build crazy stuff and test in moab. I told them bout mud, but they didnt seem to know much about it.
The cruiser is in decent shape has rust and bondo in the quarters and floors are gone (worse than #1).
Hooked it up and snapped a few pictures and headed back.
On the first mile hit 60 and the trailer started squirilling around and came close to loosing control... but fortunately the uhaul trailer has a brake that activates when you brake quick... the trailer reciever moves forward and activates some kind of brake... this straightened me out quick. It took close to 5 hours to get home. 189 Mile's going 49-51mph. (rather be safe than sorry). Saw 1 FJ40 all day and it WAS CHERRY! Deep blue color heading southbound.
On the way I stopped by a car wash and sprayed the truck down... including engine bay. When I was spraying the white color (drivers side windshield) The paint came off... red underneath. I also notice red paint came off below that and anothe color red was underneat... so this truck has been to the paintshop before and probably has decent bondo in it. Did these trucks come 2 tone? Or 1 tone... I think the latter.
The rear quarters have rot through... dont know to what extent of metal thickness, but the most likely need to be replaced... I dont know, they are 95% there and strait.
Some funny things about the truck.
- (edit added) Someone put bead board? on the roof?
- There is a padalock on the driver door exterior
- There are interior sliding latch locks on each door
- some springs streched from windshield to tailgate on the ceiling (most likely for curtains
- Screwed in House speakers (where tweaters usually go in cars today)
- a 1980's tacometer
- red rims "shrug"
- 4 holes exterior passenger side in front of the door, before th fender (possibly for gerry can?)
- It has the optional square heater
- ITS A 1964.. not a 65. But titled as 65
- Has the 1964 rear left tailight and a 1963 right rear tail lite (maybe they ran out)
- for the BEZEL police ---> The bezel is on upside down!!!!
Some nice things about this rig.
- It has tire carrier assembly with screw (dont think my other one has this)
- It is very straight
- It is all pretty much assembled - minus motor/transfer/transmission and rear drive line
- Its together (will help alot when putting the other 64 together)
- you can lock yourself in
- Seats are in pretty good shape (other than needing to be reappolstered)
- I sat on the tailgate (very cool)
- I dont think there was enought weight in the front of this rig. I think if it was reversed on it would have rode better as more weight would be over the tounge.
I has this same issue when I towed the 60 series, but thought it was the trailer ( not uhaul). I think there are anti sway hitches?
got it unloaded by 4:30 and the trailer returned by 5pm. 12 hour day, but worth every minute... my wife will suffer tonight though... I ate a whole bag of beef jerky!!! I almost lost the front clip too... fell forward and was not attached at hinge... got out just in case, GLAD I DID!
I have to get a car hauler... I have given UHAUL over $500 last year in trailer rentals "shrug".
