I recently purchased a '99 Land Cruiser w/ 166k miles on it. I have attached a table (some of the details on the receipts were vague) that outlines the previous maintenance done on the vehicle at a non - Toyota shop. The table doesn't list the timing belt which was apparently done at 120k miles... I'm still trying to get a hold of that receipt.

Based on the table and mileage, what maintenance should I be prioritizing? Is it worth taking it to a dealership here in Salt Lake and having the 90k mile maintenance package completed as a bit of a baseline? Based on my reading in the forum, I have identified a few items:
  • Brake MC cylinder rebuild (sticky brake pedal)
  • Fuel Filter - No reason other than the posts I've read
  • Re-pack bearings
  • Replace 285s on 20s with 275s on 18s
Anyone have a favorite Toyota shop here in Salt Lake City, UT? I enjoy doing the maintenance myself but would like to have a shop to fall back on if needed.

For those of you wondering, I paid $9k for the vehicle which I felt was a fair deal considering the condition (great cosmetically), mileage, and potential maintenance work that was required.

Thanks - this forum has been priceless!

I bought mine with 150k on it. Pfran LED's was the first mod. The second, even though I had receipts that showed it had been done, was engine oil, front and rear diff, and transfer case fluids. I took oil samples and sent them to Blackstone Labs for analysis so I would have a baseline for where the TLC was when I bought it. I've since changed the oil and sent a sample in to see how the engine was doing (great!!!). I'll do the same for the other fluids when I put 20,000k on the other fluid changes.

20's Idk, it's your LC but if you go with 20's, that's less tire sidewall. If you spend any time off road I can't imagine that to be a good thing. But... I'm old school and I haven't kept up with the latest and greatest off roading trends. It'll be interesting to see other replies

Correct... Get rid of the 20s. I also don't plan on doing much off-road with this vehicle... I work at a mine site (higher elevation) and wanted a solid winter and camping vehicle.

Thanks.

I think the original poster plans to replace the 20s that are currently on the LC with 18s.

Indeed he did. Time to find a reading comprehension training website. I read that completely backwards.

Yeah, sorry about that. I read it backwards.

I'd say you got what you wanted. $9k sounds like a good price. I took mine up to the Eureka mine site north of Silverton, Colorado and it did great. Dirt road with a little snow that turned to mush and mud later in the day at higher elevations.

Congrats on your purchase! Agree with Mike's suggestions, but would add a Tranny flush to his list. Basic 90k tuneup would probably be beneficial. Looks like the Antenna needs some love?

Heater T's and thermostat if hasn't been done. Two little failures that can leave you stranded quickly.

Antenna will definitely be on the list as well... looking at replacing it with another automatic versus manual after reading a lot of posts on this one. Just finished installing a Pioneer DVD player... back-up camera and remote start system is next.

Talked to the guys at Cruiser Outfitters when the brakes went out on my LC.

They recommended Divinity near down town since they don't do repairs like that.

Divinity specializes in Toyota / Lexus repair. They were great to work with and seem to have done a good job at a decent price.

Thanks for the reference - I was unaware of Divinity Auto. I'll give them a call. As a quick update, I just put replaced the 20s this morning. Couldn't be happier with the results - just need to find wheels caps from a older Land Cruiser now.

Thanks again.
