Hey guys,

My new to me 2000 LC has a sticky ignition switch. Sometimes it works the first time and then other times it takes some jiggling of the key and turning up the wheel to finally get it to turn. I ordered a new ignition cylinder with the transmitter housing key from Toyota but have some questions.

The transmitter key (key with lock and unlock buttons) that came with my LC will lock and unlock the vehicle but it wont start the car. I assume its not programmed.

The new ignition cylinder I bought came with 2 empty transmitter housing keys. I’m assuming I’ll need to take the guts of my key and put them into one of these.

My question is if I installed this new lock cylinder myself will the new key need to be programmed to work with the vehicle? I’m trying to figure out if this is something I can do myself or if the dealer will need to do it for me. Below are pictures of my current key (that wont start the vehicle) and the new oem lock cylinder and keys I ordered.

Any clarification would be greatly appreciated!

How are you starting the rig now?

Is your security light flashing?

The immobilizer uses the transponder chip in the key housing separate from the guts that performs the lock/unlock functions.

I have 2 normal keys that work. When I bought the truck, the previous owner gave me the lock/unlock key in pieces in a bag. I put a new battery in it and it works to lock/unlock just wont start it.

I believe its the immobilizer which Toyota told me is in the actual metal part of the key that needs programming.

Since I plan to replace the lock cylinder, I’m not worried about programming the lock/unlock key I have. I’m just worried about programming the new keys that came with the new cylinder.

The transponder chip would be a little black item on the side of the guts that controls the lock/unlock. It’s the size of a peanut.

Thanks good to know. That part is all and well since it will lock/unlock the vehicle. Now I just need to figure out the programming of the new keys once the new ignition cylinder is installed.
