Well, we headed out to show my GF a very cool place not far from my home.

Old mining town called New Idria. http://www.new-idria.org/

Actually, a ghost town now with some strange (The Hills Have Eyes) people living around the fringes. Kind of creepy but cool nonetheless.

The local mines produced cinnabar which is the raw ore that produces Methyl Mercury when heated. http://webmineral.com/data/Cinnabar.shtml

They also mined naturally occurring asbestos which is everywhere so you should only really go there when the ground is damp and there is no dust.

There is a semi-precious stone called Benitoite which is really only found there. http://webmineral.com/data/Benitoite.shtml
There are still some old miners with claims working the area for this stone.
You can buy some of this stone at a local bar called Panoche Inn, about 30 miles up the road.

Anyway, it is sort of a big boy's (and girl's) play ground. The BLM area neighboring the town is called Clear Creek and you can ride dirtbikes, off-road vehicles, shoot, hunt and play in one of the many open mine shafts.
If you get in the backwoods on a bike, you can find old mining claims, homsteads and cinnnabar ovens along with many old relics.

Dangerous and not for kids.

Here are some pics of the various "attractions".

Trying a new way of posting pics...

Neat spot, wheeled to the top of San Benito mountain and camped once, we could see merced, Madera, Fresno, Visalia and all the small cities at night, wow what a view

Yea, it is cool

My pics turned out screwy, all off to the side.

Hmmm,

Too lazy to redo it. Sorry....scroll to the right!

:D

Well, it is apparently privately owned, at least the land that the town sits on is. But it is an historic site so the owner cannot mess with it or close it off.
The road that goes through it is public and not gated.
Open access. You can stop there in town and take pictures and look around, as I have done a hundred times, without ever seeming anyone around.
However, this last time, some guy pulled up after I had stopped and told me that I was not allowed to enter the buildings as I could get hurt, and that he had a caretaker "watching me".
I told him not to worry and he left with little more discussion.
Hung out in the town for an hour and looked everywhere without seeing another soul. If you just respect the keep out signs on the old buildings and not shoot holes in things (which people have), you will be fine and see a lot of very cool history.

Clear Creek, where all of the old mine shafts and OHV areas are, is completely open to everyone except for the areas which have already been closed off by Sierra Club type influence. It is BLM.
There are some big goofy home made no trespassing signs on the road in town but they are old and mean nothing about the road and Clear Creek.

Surrounding the town are pieces of private land to stay off of, but that is clearly marked and you would have to be pretty ignorant to stumble up there.

If you guys ever want a tour guide, let me know. I love to go out there and look around. I always find something new to enjoy.

Let's do it!

I would be in depending on the date.

Ridden dirtbikes and had many a bonfire at Clear Creek. New Idra gives me the creeps though... Neat place and very cool historical stuff... but everytime I ride through there I wanna gas it and get the F-outtta dodge. Would be fun to explore in a "group setting" though (im such a woos)

Uncle has been riding bikes there for 40 years and said that New Idra used to be a halfway house some time back.

Was the guy with the thousand cats still tending the town? I know a lot of trails in CC. Its great dirt riding too. I haven't been since they put a BLM trailer out there. I also found hundreds of chickens there one time that farmers released. Way better trails than Hollister. Cinnabar hill is cool. Goat mountain road and North quicksilver trail are downright sketch because of the lose soil and steepnes.

Clear Creek kicks ass for dirt bike riding!! (or at least used too) You can get lost VERY easily out there... I used to go every other weekend, for two riding seasons religiously.. and still don't know half of the trails..

As for 4-wheelers it'll mostly be fireroads

There is a guy that lives in that town..I guess the "caretaker"
The only Modern looking house is the one he's in.

Ohh and if I get my lockers in by then (40 is on jackstands right now) and it's not raining I'll be down to go....

Double...Ohhh, if it's raining be prepared for the upmost sloppyness!!!! seriously

Wow, that brings back memories!! The wife and I went one weekend and camped. I had alot of cool pics, but can't find them right now. It's long drive in from Hwy 25!!

I'd like to go back.

man been wanting to go never been there and i live in hanford... want to go with people who have been there... set up a day lets do it.....
