Wanted New Here - Looking to buy FJ40

Hi all -

New member here. I have been a fan of the FJ for years, but have never pulled the trigger on a purchase. My wife and I recently got some finances in order and I have the green light to pursue a purchase of an FJ40.

I am not looking for anything that is show room quality. Just something that has good paint, no rust, original engine, mechanically sound, etc. We have two dogs and we plan on using the hell out of this thing. I prefer the hard top

Does anyone here have a vehicle for sale or know of one for sale that isn't going to completely break the bank. We are looking to spend $20k max (including shipping). I've already looked around a little through the classifieds and everything that I have liked is either over our budget, or wasn't to our liking
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated -

Thanks!

Good paint, no rust, original for $20k is a tall order.

How about decent paint, minimal rust and mostly original. It's important to realize very few vehicles that are 35 years old and older or rust free. If it has a little rust, I wouldn't be too concerned as long as it's repairable. Good luck on your search. Take a peek at LCnation.com.

I don't currently have a truck that meets the criteria but there's a lot of good information on the site that may be helpful .

Ah - I literally just sent you a PM lol. Thanks for the heads up! I guess I should have worded my original post a little better. Surface rust or easily repairable rust is OK as long as there isn't a lot of it. Paint does not need to be perfect by any means. I am okay with all original just as long as it is mechanically sound

Since you're in Charlotte, check out the Olde North State Cruisers clubhouse HERE.

You need to educate yourself on the nuances by year to narrow your search. THIS is the best place to start.

The Carolina Relic Run is less than a month away and close to you. You should come check out the 40's that will be there.

PM me if you have questions. There are a lot of guys in your area and we get together monthly.

You shouldn't have a problem finding one in that shape with your budget. Just be patient something will pop up.

I have a nice 66' daily driver that I am looking to sell. It is 99% stock, has original 6 cyl engine, repainted and reupholstered 12 years ago. Interior is perfect and paint has just enough patina so it looks good. It has minimal rust, meaning both front wheel wells have rust holes but nowhere else, all other body panels are very solid and rust free. I don't think you would any stock FJ40 6-cyl engine if you want to drive on the freeway. You will probably want to add a short block chevy engine and new tranny to whatever you buy, my guess is add $5,000 for all of that. Throw in $1,000 for shipping from NV to NC. My bottom number was $10,000, but I'll give it to you for $9,500. I bought it from a friend last year for $12k and need space in my garage. Believe me, it's worth taking a couple grand hit on it so I don't have to listen to my wife complain. LOL.

Haha thanks much for sharing. Trust me, I know the feeling (regarding the wife situation)
My wife is bitching at me currently because she want's an FJ40 in the driveway IMMEDIATELY lol. I guess that isn't a terrible problem to have, but it really puts a damper on things such as actually making an informed purchase hahaha.

I'll keep you in mind though. I wouldn't mind seeing more detailed pictures of the FJ whenever possible

:poof:

Reserve was $8500. I bought it 1 1/2 yrs ago and realized I didn't have as much garage space as I thought. Also, the stock 6-cyl is not the same as my 3.0 EFI in my 72' Bronco. Don't mind taking a hit on it, but $8,500 is as low as I can go.

Thanks Cary. I appreciate you posting the pics. I did see your listing on ebay actually, but I thought it had already come and gone. If it were up to me, I would buy your rig in a heartbeat, but me wife wants something a little different
