Been around the valley for a better part if 20 years. Have had a dozen or so Toyota's. Got my first fj80 this week. Needs a little this and a little that. Took it up to John's peaks for a little test hit and to get familiar with it last night. Very impressed. Out did my last xj that was midly built. Only issue I noticed was it liked to get pretty warm on the longer hills. But definetly a fan. Future mods custom bumpers and slides. Larger springs, gears and probably just a single locker

Nice! Welcome. Drag you and your 80 to our meeting next week (Feb 8th) and say hello.

Looks like you have '91-92? w/ 3FE? no?

Obviously here on 'mud there is a lot of great info. Also Jon's site: http://www.sdsysdesign.com/tlc/fsm.html for your model if it is what it looks to be.

Ya, I know confusing thread title, we were shooting for a Jan meeting, but got pushed to early Feb.

Welcome! I've seen some excellent deals on those years of '80 series 'Cruisers. The forum here is a great asset for fixing stuff. Keep an eye on the temp, obviously. A muratic acid flush may do wonders, if it doesn't kill your radiator. I did such on a rig last summer and the performance of the radiator was horrible before and awesome afterward. Hope to see ya at the meeting.

it has a new radiator and fan and all that, water pump seems a little weak so im just going to set up a pair of electric fans and go from there.

Are these things pretty sensitive to radiator cap? I found the OEM one tucked away and tore back and it was 13psi? And the one in it is 6. And I'm almost positive its a fan issue. At idle and running through town or on the highways it runs cool as can be. Always about 100-150 yards into a climb that I have it in 4low it heats up super fast . it has some cheese after market 5blade metal fan that runs all the time off the pully. Will be deleting that and running an e fan tomorrow and go find a climb to test

Can be. i would use the stock OEM rad cap (if good), replace the fan blade with OEM and service the fan clutch. IMHO a e fan tossed in there is band-aid.

It would be used as a bandaid but I do want to run an e fan anyways as back up I'm thinking?

Minus the heat issue and the random parts coming looks on this and my brothers sammi today was a pretty good day. First time up salt creek. Was fun. Looks like a few more runs are in order to explore

You should see a steady climb from 1/3 to middle to 2/3 but it shouldn't get near the "H". My fJ62 always ran at 1/3 unless pulling a hill really hard, maybe 1/2. The factory gauge could be off but you can put a cooking thermometer on the top section of the cooling fins and get a good guess, 180/190 should be about 1/3 up the gauge.
Do some searching here on mud and you will find lots of good tidbits..

It got hot enough to steam out. And everything under the hood is good to go minus the fan situation.

On a 91-92, at least, temp gauge should rise quickly to halfway and then stick like glue. Never had either of mine go even a hint above that without an obvious issue like a bad fan clutch.

I think the problem is the HG is starting to go. Everything has been good power wise and I did a back up auxiliary e fan for just in case and was in the mountains all day yesterday without a problem. Well was going to adjust the valves today and noticed a very slight milk residue... Long story short looks like one of my soon to be upgrades will be postponed while I do this

If you have tried everything else then that may be the culprit. You don't have to pull the block but the 3fe has a lot of stuff in the way.. I have a sniff test kit but it may or may not be good but the slime is not a good sign..

Pulling the intake and exhaust looks fun. Its the only thing I can think if. But it didn't heat up at all yesterday. I might just use some blue devil and limp it a little longer so when I pull the head I can have some work done to it.
