Have a blown head gasket, 1995 FJ80 with 153k. Are there any specific things to be aware of or I should inspect or fix/replace, while replacing the head gasket? Thanks in advance.

there's a ginormous amount of info on this topic so i'd do a search and then drink from the fire hose!

oh yeah YT is a great resource, forgot about that.

Have head rebuilt with all new seals
Same with valve cover
Every rubber part under the hood
Clean the upper intake manifold for EGR reasons
New heater valve
PHH
Dizzy O-ring
Oil pump seal
Front main seal
Power steering hoses
Rear heater hard lines if needed
Don't forget to flush the entire cooling system to remove any oil residue.

search will reveal this info but I recommend people doing the HG project to pull the whole engine out and address myriad of other things that need to be replaced. I've done the HG jobs twice and I feel that pulling the engine out with the ECU harness is much easier (for me) than being bent over for hours over the fenders. Chances are that the engine rear main seal is leaking, as well as the "upper oil pan" gasket. Again, search will reveal lots of info on all this.

If you want to turn this into a major overhaul project, go for it. But there is no need to pull the engine for a head gasket!!! I've lost track of how many I have done and I would never pull the engine (and transmission remember) to do this job. Never.

A head gasket replacement is a pretty straightforward job. No need to turn it into anything epic.

Mark....

I agree with you. Heck, I even did my whole engine rebuild as PM because I wanted a "new" vehicle, so I did a reset on everything (it seems like). The only issue I had was a leaking PHH.
My intended use required maximum dependability. Also, I wanted the project, "for fun."

Pulling the engine and transmission isn't that difficult, and makes everything easy after that.
Post 8 above has valid points as well. It all depends on your situation.
Happy trails
