Hey everyone. I’m Derek and I’ve been lurking for a few years now. I’ve finally pulled the trigger on a green ’99 LX no-navi. It’s in excellent shape with only 69k miles at purchase; the guy only used it to buy groceries for his restaurant on weekends. It was purchased here in the south-bay and I’m the third owner. I ended up paying a little over $16k for the truck and over the last few months of ownership I haven’t found any surprises.

I started the mods right away. We kicked it off with Metal Tech step-sliders and some Toyo Open Country A/T2’s in 285/75/16. Then the Slee shipment showed up with the front, mid and belly skid plates, diff drop kit and ARB front/rear lockers with the standard ARB compressor. I also ordered the 80 series switch for the lockers and a factory “fog” switch for the compressor so the interior keeps the factory look.

I have yet to hit the chrome with plasti-dip but I did pull most of the rear badges off. I have a rear window leak to track down. The skid plates and diff drop aren’t on yet as we just got done moving.

Here is a shot from around the time I picked it up in December, all ready for the mall:

And how it looks as of 3-7-13:

I’ve always been a sports car guy so this is all new to me except for a lot of reading on how 4wd systems work. I would love for anyone from the Santa Cruz area to take me out so I can develop some trail skill. I decided to build it up here and ship it to France where I’m moving to so I’ll only be able to use it in this country for the next 4-6 weeks depending on when we give it to the international shippers. Too much for one (first) post?

Cheers

Derek-

Looks like a nice rig at a good price Derek.

Good luck.

That's a nice way to bring a piece of home with you overseas - that will be a giant vehicle there compared to average, won't it?

That's gonna be quite a few euro to fill the tank too!

I'm jealous, I'm still saving up for the arb locker and I'll probably only get the front.

I didn't know the diff drop kit was a good combo with stock ahc (or am I reading that wrong?)

Good luck in France!

Yeah, it will be big for France, but they did (and do) sell them there. And since gas will be about 2.5x more expensive this will definately not be a primary vehicle of any kind. As far as I have read the diff-drop is clearly unnecessary on a stock vehicle unless you roll with AHC maxxed out all the time. I just got it because you need it to mount the skid plates.

BTW: I see that my dent got in the picture, just above the rear wheel and below the rear passenger door handle. I'm leaving it there cause I'm gonna say it's trail damage :D
