Hi,
I am about to upgrade my factory exhaust for an aftermarket one. The truck is HJ61. I want all opinions with regards whether i should get a straight through muffler or simply just straight pipe without muffler. I will definitely go with 3" mandrel bend. Another thing is should i keep the factory dump pipe or go aftermarket? I heard some people comments on the original and its supposedly well designed and adequate and that it does not need upgrading. Pan

Just make sure you use a dump pipe with the flexi mesh to keep the vibration from destroying the exhaust mounts

subscribed. isn't the stocker 2 1/2"? mine certainly looks that size. i know it is much bigger than the stock 13BT exhaust.

mine rumbles pretty good stock, i was thinking about removing the stock muffler and going with a highflow muffler, but dont want to piss off the neighbors too much as its a DD ;)

the noise is ok with 3" straight pipe long as it has couple bends, or just slap one highflow muffler on it, gives a bit more grunt to it compared to stock 2 1/2" pipe...

I am happy with my 3" without a muffler. It is definitely louder but I don't find it overbearing. Turbo is very loud now, nice "woosh" on shifts...sounds like a dump truck! Noticable difference in performance, revs better, holds hills longer in high gear and fuel mileage has improved a bit. EGT should have gone down too, I don't have a pyro yet to note the difference though.

cheers for that guys. 88 that sounds very nice! thx for posting tate video up mate, and the pictures. thats exactly the setup i want, 3" straight through with no muffler. is that VX jap. import? i noticed you walked to the RHS at the start. pan

Yes it's a JDM VX. I maintained the stock down pipe. The system is not mandrel bent so it'll be just under 3" in the bends but it's not a race car :D

Have any of you had any issues with 3"? I have talked to a muffler shop and a Toyota diesel mechanic and they both recommend 2.5" max. They say the motor is designed for some back pressure and could lead to more mechanical problems down the road. Sure, I want my truck to breathe a bit better but not at the cost of major mechanical repair down the line. Any info on 2.5" vs 3" would be great.... thanks.

i know alot of ppl who run straight 3" pipes and no problems with any of them, only thing the lack of backpressure will cause is faster spool up of turbo due the greater pressure differential...

That turbo whisl sounds awsum

A mate runs a 3" pipe no mufflers on his turbo'd hj75 troopy sounds awsum as well and seemed to free the motor up
and isnt to loud on long trips away

I recently replaced the exhaust on my 2h turbo. I couldn't warrant spending the cash for 3" mandrel as:

1. Low reving engine
2. low boost engine
3. low power engine

So I went for a pressbent 2.5" system with a free flowing Lukey muffler to keep it quiet...I don't want to get tired of drone on long trips.

These are my thoughts and I base them on modifying petrol cars/engines for performance for quiet a few years (tired of racing :) ).

Are you saying because you have low revs, boost and power, a 3" exhaust wouldn't benefit you? What if you increase your boost?

I'm just saying the difference between 2.5 press and 3" mandrel is negligable when used on these engines when stock. If he has upped boost, opened up the inlet tract etc to increase volumetric efficiency then maybe, just maybe a 3" mandrel would be required but even then I don't think so.

So everyone who has done this on a stock motor has wasted money?

What people do with their money is not my business. I wouldn't spend the extra as I do not believe it to be worthwhile.

Please stop trying to antagonise, it's my opinion. ;)

I'm not trying to antagonize at all. I'm merely asking because I'm trying to make a decision. I don't want to waste money either.

Oh, ok then I am sorry. A large exhaust can't hurt on a turbo engine but unless someone can post back to back dyno results then I am going to stick with my judgment.

Maybe go for a press bent 3" system just to be sure, to save a few dollars. But a mandrel bent 3" exhaust on a 130kw engine is just ridiculous in my opinion.

Im with dousty on this one,im doing my system on a hj61 soon and i'll be going 2.5 with a straight through type muffler, on these rigs i just can't see the need for a 3inch pipe.
I'd like to see dyno results also,i bet theres little or no difference, these are landcruisers not motocross bikes.
