Putting in my new dash, all gauges are 12v VDO electronic gauges. I am running a 10 amp 24 v to 12 v converter (my truck is a 1979 BJ40) for powering these gauges and later on a radio.

My problem is that I need a continous 12v power supply for my radio presets, clock etc. but also a 12v power feed wich is cut of when the contact switch is turned off.

Can I use 24v to activate the coil in the relay and then have 12v run through the 85/86 terminal of the relay?

85 and 86 are the contacts of the coil for your relay. What you need is a 24v relay. I have been using the Hella 87426 relays with great results...good for 10A at the coil, and 20A at the switch. You would wire 85 to a +24v ignition switched power source, 86 to ground, 30 to your +12v power supply, and 87 to your 12v radio's ignition lead. That will give you a switched 12v power in your 24v system. You can also hook up your cigarette lighter (+) lead to the same relay at pin 87 and get switched 12v power to the cigarette lighter.
