i had a seeper coolant leak that exploded into a big leak where my thermostat housing meets the head. i changed the gasket put coolant in it fired it up and went and took a test drive. im the dumbass for not checking for leaks before it got hot but i was driving and it started to get hot so i headed home and barely made it. my heat guage wasnt in the red it was hot though. now my coolant leak has developed into a massive leak from the same place. my question is has anyone raninto this problem, and is my thermostat housing warped or my head more prone to warp.

When I changed my t-stat a while ago, I ruined the new gasket installing it. It leaked. Is there any chance you could fumbled the gasket install?

Or,

you could check the hoses in that area. Did you forget to tighten a hose clamp?

nope 100% its commin from where the housing bolts to the head bottom left hand corner by the bolt hole i did add a little silicone to keep it on the housing, would you add silicone to a gasket to make it seal better, for me its ususlly either use silicone only or use a gasket.

Where did you get the gasket? Did you torque the bolts? I cracked one when putting that piece back on one time. Where on the gasket is it leaking?

You might have a small crack. How did it look when you had it off the head?

got it at o rileys its a felpro, i got the bolts good and tight with a 1/4 inch ratchet. leaking from the bottom left hand corner, im thinking about takeing the housing to the machine shop to see if the surface is a true surface

didnt look like there was a crack if there was it was really small, ive even de greased it the face looks crackless on the housing

I think it is aluminum cause mine cracked easily. Maybe the gasket moved when you tightened it down. But leaking in the same place points kinda to the piece.

yea i agree ill probably take it to the machine shop cant cost as much as a new one and ill have them check to see on if its warped they have all of those fine as wine tools. but i dont disagree with you that the dam thing is probably cracked. but check up tommro ill have another post on how it goes. by the way if i lock it up no big deal it burns a quart every 40 miles oooo yea gotta love burnt oil i might be doing myself a favor to blow the beast up so i can rebuild that sucker

I cracked the lower thermostat housing on my last cruiser. Broke a bolt that held the top to lower housing, tried to use an easy out, but when putting the pressure on the lower housing, I cracked it and didn't know it... Went to fill the thing up with coolant, and it poured out coolant. Did you put any extra pressure on the lower housing?

hey lucas i've got a lower T stat housing somewhere. leme look for it and i'll mail it to ya... as well i copper coat that gasket real well. also make sure the bolt heads are bottoming out on the housing and aren't to long...

Gasket? I threw mine away and got some gray RTV from the Toyota dealer, that was at the beginning of the summer and still no leaks. :hillbilly:

PS I cracked the bottom thermostat housing and got it fixed with putty type epoxy.

matt thanks for the offer i might take it up on the housing im going to check the one that came off of the 85 and see what kind of shape thats in if i need it ill let you kno thanks brother
for tsototh i dont think that i put anu stress on it altough i did ghange the stat cause it was stuck open so i might have stressed it there but i did have a little leak before i changed the stat.

for all who posted thanks for all suggestions and all of youre help thank you. got the leak fixed i used a flat file to file the surface and got it good and clean then i tried the copper gasket sealer. i applied to the head the housing and applied a bunch to both sides of the gasket. let it dry for about 10 minuts and fired it up let it run for like 20 min no leak then drove about 10 miles and still no leak i think that i can check this one off as done and thanks again to all.
