Fellow Crusierheads -

I'm a member of the Captal Land Cruisers in Wash. DC and I need to find someone to help out by brother who is stationed at the NAS on Whidbey Island and lives in Anacortes. He recently purchased an FJ40 ('76 I think) with a Chevy 350 and the stock 4 speed and transfer turning 33" Mickey Thompsons. He has two issues he is looking at:

1) While driving 55 mph on both level and steep inclines he is loosing power like there is a fuel starvation problem. Stalled the engine when on the flat, but started after sitting awhile. Similar story while climbing one of the long steep bridges. Is there a shop in Anacortes or nearby that you guys would recommend? Especially one that knows Crusiers, even though this one has a 350 in it.

2) He complains that the truck darts around the road (manual steering). Over the phone, I walked him through checking the steering components for excessive play. He says he didn't find any. He has a single stabillizer and I told him how to check it. I suspect his steering is normal for a 40 series and the "problem" is he is not used to driving a vehicle with large wide tires and manual steering. He normally drives a Honda or a BMW and it's been 32 years since he drove my FJ40 in high school. I supect he is leaning towards doing a power steering conversion, assuming the steering set-up he has is a solid foundation. Are there any club members in the Anacortes area who can check out his cruiser or advise on a local shop to help him?

Thanks for your help guys!

First thing I do when I buy one is tighten the linkage (castleated nut behind front driver's side tire). That will make a noticeable improvement if it is loose and takes 5 minutes. He lives near higher wind gusts and those can add to the problem.
That's my 2 cents and now I'm broke. :meh:

Thanks Guys

Thanks guys! I'll pass the information along. He mentioned wind gusts and a tightening of the sphincter....I guess that's what he meant (never can tell with my brother).

We appreciate the help!
