Looks like a good trip, but a bugfest. I used to whitewater canoe up their and the bugs were brutal until mid July. Yankee toys should do a trip in that area, but late summer. Nial, bring your bug headnets

Agreed. On both your points.

Can you still buy 100% DET?

not sure on the DET, question is, will you live through usage. I work outside during bug season. I have tried everything and for the last 15 years use nothing and just suck it up. Don't wear black, don't swat at the bugs and do office work for a week when the black flies are the worst

I was thinking about it....But thanks Gary for telling it how it is. I'll pass. Black fly's take away your sanity in a short time.

I have a camp about 75 miles west of there and while the bugs are bad at times, if there's any breeze at all you'll be fine. Cabela's does sell bug spray with a high content of Deet, but I can't remember what % it is. One word of caution on Deet, is that it will melt any plastic it comes in contact with.

While I have not spent a lot time up in that area of Maine, I have in the Rumford/Woodstock area, and the worst black fly time seems to be May with peak being the Memorial day weekend. By late June they always seemed bearable, on par or less than with mosquitos.

I really hate biting flies of all kind, (coastal geen-heads being the reason I don't live on the Northshore), but I'm going to give the event a try.

Highest I've seen recently is 50%. Ben's I think. Oh yes it does....

Alex, have you done any wheeling around your camp or the area to the west?

I have not. Most of the roads are gated so we always go in by boat.

Great area, I know it well, been racing rally on those (private) logging roads for a decade.

We generally go there for fly fishing, hiking and boating. My kids would like to go there for the entire summer. Wish we could.

Fall is beautiful up there around Upton too, and ruffled grouse are in season around then if you hunt. There's some fun wheeling to be had off those paper company roads!

Now sold out.....

Looks like there will be strong Land Cruiser representation!

3 more day until it begins. Long to-do list until then...

Well? How was it?

Got back late Monday night from 5 days of adventuring in Maine on the Northeast Overland "Moose on the loose" trek. Our "team" included: Gary Rapanotti, Jason Hollingsworth, Scott Crowley, Daniela Manago, and me. We got waaaaay the heck up there into the North Maine Woods and got to visit the abandoned logging locomotives at Eagle Lake and the B52 crash site at Elephant Mountain. There were 20 trucks in the group, but our team of 3 trucks represented for Yankee Toys and the Land Cruiser marquee.
We only saw one moose (and two fresh calfs) the first day, after that just hoof prints in the mud. Weather was perfect but very cold Friday night, down to about 45F. Great way to kick off the 4 wheeling season. And yes we fed the local insect population but mostly mosquitos....

Overall It was a fantastic time with a great bunch of people. Great camaraderie and laughs around the fire pit, definitely fun for the whole family event. Only complaint was that we could have used more time in low range. But with a wide variety of skill sets in the group trek, the organizers kept the route pretty tame. We did break-off on Sunday and explore a bit, shoulda done more of that on Friday.

This is one of those trips on my list. I have a question about tires. My street tires are 35x12.50 Duratracs. Do you think these would be adequate for this type of run? My other choice is to drag up my Swampers and swap them before/after, but I'm not sure how much blacktop and at what speeds we're talking about on this trip.
