anyone know where i can get some field stone or flat rock on the cheap? I want to do some landscaping but don't want to pay the going rate for a pallet for rock when i need to be putting that money in the 80.

I hear ya on the price.

I know it's along way to drive but I've been picking mine off the side of the road. There is a new section of road through the Kicking Horse Pass and when I drive through I stop and hop the guard rail and pick rocks. I pass them over the guardrail to the wife who puts them in the trunk.

Just so you know, the Kicking Horse Pass is in the Canadian Rockies.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I have heard that you can go up to a quarry off Capital going towards Wake Forest, and get a pick up truck load for $25-30. That is coming from word of mouth, and maybe 2 years ago. I haven't tried, but I'm in the same boat as you and it's worth a shot. I'm not sure of the name of the quarry, but you have to hunt it down from what I've heard.

Let me know what you find out...

Guys, let me know if you won't more info on the quarries, I have several salesman that can answer this question for you all.

There is one quarry on Capital and two in Franklinton:
Hanson Aggregates-Capital Blvd.
Sunrock-Franklinton
Martin Marietta-Franklinton

That would be fantastic, I'd love to get another project going! I'd love to put a pond/stream/pond together in my yard...

cheap "scr-aps"/left overs broken peices will be fine, not looking for grade A rock.. just cheap.. is one quarry cheaper then another? that is my question? i figure about 2 pallets worth.

Eric, how far are you looking to go? If you can recall the stone here at my house, well that took 4 pallets. Once you start stacking it disappears pretty quickly, but then again there are alot of variable involved, i.e. height, length, and believe it or not depth, based on the type of stone.

PM Jason (jFZ80) he may have another source as well. I will contact my salesmen on monday and get you a price.

Also check craigslist, I have seen several pallets for a reasonable price on there as well

Thanks for all the input. I just want to create a small visual division line between the lawn and the shrubs in front of my house, maybe stacking it 2-3 stones high about 20 feet in length. Ideally i would like the stone to be about the size of brick, but not be uniform in size. I have been half way looking for a little while but haven't found my deal yet. This kind of rock is as common as weeds back in WV. I might just start bring it back with me when i go home to visist. I know, i know I would pay for it in gas, but at least i wouldn't be buying the rock. :)
