guys, I do remember reading countless posts where it was said that only OEM parts will do. There were also numerous discussion of grease but I don't recall any mention of it being OEM. I need to get some but it seems like the local auto stores typically only have 2 or 3 different "generic" kinds.
So it is possible/necessary to get the grease at the Toy dealer or does one just grab whatever sounds closest to what is specified?
(Have no idea what's in there now, so don't want to risk the dreaded liquefaction issue discussed recently...)

manual says I need
Lithium base wheel bearing grease NLGI No. 2
and
MoS2 Lithium base chassis grease NLGI No. 2

so what and where?

thanks
Eric

Eric - here's my limited view:

#2 chassis grease for the u-joints is fine.
#2 grease with moly for the inner knuckles
high temp wheel bearing grease for the wheel bearings.

Forgot Toyota, I doubt they sell grease (but could be wrong). i think it's mainly in the knuckles and wheel bearings that you need to worry about mixing. I assume you are just doing the u-joints so you should be ok. When you do the knuckles and bearings another day.. research what you are going to use. Lot's of discussion on that in previous threads. Most say not to use moly on wheel bearings however I used redline wheel bearing grease with moly for my wheel bearings.

a note on the redline... I like it but could never get it to pump in the 2 grease guns I've tried. I need to talk to them about that.

I want to squirt stuff everywhere... The more the merrier... j/k ;) but I'll add some wherever it's needed, including knuckes if dry looking.

manual says to use Lithium for prop shafts and wheel bearings and moly/lithium for knuckes. No special mention of high temp.

No OEM grease except for a couple very special service types. None of which apply to the 80.

Sorry Eric, I used high temp but your right the manual does not mention high temp. I removed by D'oh on that line.

i think #2 grease is lithum base which from the writings of Cary or Doug is the thickener. So #2 is fine. Assuming you get #2 (which is real common) the only real diff is the moly and only use that in the knuckles. So you need 2 types of #2.

I had assumed that NLGI No. 2 refers to some sort of grading, kinda like SL for oil.
Not true?

OK, did some research.
Apparently a NLGI No. 2 rating refers to the consistency.
The "quality" properties of the grease are rated with an A, B, C system.

a lot of people here use Valvoline syn w/moly in the knuckle and Mobil 1 syn everywhere else

I am trying an experiment with AeroShell 17 in the knuckle and MobilGrease 28 everywhere else (both high quality synthetics with inert inorganic thickeners) no results yet good or bad
