Howdy,

I've been doing my best to read as much as possible on this board, but honestly, there's so much to read, I'm confused.

I'm looking at a FJ62 for sale right now and was hoping someone in the bay area can let me come by and they can give me a brief tutorial on where to look for rust, and the differences in types of rust (what's ok on a 20 yr old cruiser, and what's not).

Alternatively, if someone has a picture tutorial (the written ones lose me), that should work.

I hope to go check out one for sale in the next few days, so any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks.

Robert

p.s., as it looks like it'll need a repaint, I'm not too terribly worried about surface rust on the body, as that'll get fixed during the paint job - it's more underneath the body, or what's not on the surface that I really would like to know what to look for.

thx

R

The Bay Area is a big place. Pacifica rust is way different than Livermore rust.

Look around the drip rail of the roof, bottom of all five doors and inside the bottom of the rockers and the front and rear quarters.

An '89 should have a carfax report, I think. Make sure it didn't come from back east somewhere.

yep.... check the rear frame cause it is not boxed in.....known for rust

Do yourself a favor...take a good magnet check the wheel wells rockers.....everything he said

Vehicle is an original Cali car. Currently in silicon valley area. What is the magnet for? To determine if someone used bondo?

As for the rear frame, I just don't know where to look w/o a picture. What do you mean "not boxed in"?

Thanks.

just lay under the gas tank area and look at the frame and see if you see rust.

Normally truck frames as you well know have 4 sides..that is called boxed.
The tail end of a 60/62 frame is only 3...known to get rust sandwiched in there.

Not a bad idea for the FAQ. However, you should make a concerted effort to follow the written directions given so far if you're interested in learning more about the 20yr old truck you're considering purchasing. IMO, surface rust should also be a concern because even when it's sanded down to what looks like good metal, sometimes it's still there and can eventually return to its evil ways. As already mentioned, the bottom of the fenders and doors are known problem areas, as are the roof gutters. Underneath, the most likely area to encounter rust is the inner rear frame rails. Crawl under the truck where the spare tire is mounted (or should be mounted) and look at both sides of the frame from the axle back to the bumper. If you can take a screwdriver and peel off extensive rust flakes you may have found a deal buster, or at least a good basis for negotiating a lower price.

Thanks. That's what I thought you meant by not boxed. Initial pictures look pretty good, but I can't see underneath from what I've been sent.

Cross yer fingers.

Thanks.

Robert
