I have a post in the tech section, weird idle issue. Is there anyone in the Raleigh/Durham/Johnston County area that would be willing to take a look at my 80 series in the next few weeks? It's giving me a fit. I'm good with the older mini trucks but these things are just a lot more difficult to figure out. Thanks in advance!

What kind of idle issues? I just replaced my throttle position sensor with a unit from Rockauto.com.

My TPS went downhill fast. On the way home from work, my truck started surging most noticeably at stop lights. Idle was 1000 rpm. The closer I got to home, the worse it got. Turning into the driveway, idle was 2100 rpm and the truck was difficult to stop. I searched the forums and determined it was either idle control valve or the throttle position sensor. The TPS was the cheapest of the two so I purchased it. It's not necessary but I took off my throttle body and gave it a good cleaning, replaced the TPS, and cleaned the ICV. I checked all the vacuum lines and reassembled. The truck has been running great ever since.

I did install another used TPS not long ago with no noticeable change. I cleaned the throttle body as well. I've installed lots of new parts and done a tune up recently as well. It has an intermittent idle... Sometimes it idles at 750, sometimes 400ish and shakes bad. It always has a little bit of a shake to it though, so I'm thinking misfire. Im not sure what's causing it though. I recently checked the timing and it was way off. I set it to 6 degrees and it has a bad hesitation in lower rpms, but smooths out on the top end. I'm not sure what to make of that. Tooth off on the distributor maybe? It had a bad flat spot before I messed with the timing, then would surge in acceleration. It's driving me crazy.

I also cleaned the idle control valve, a few times.

Any engine codes? Can you list all of the parts you've replaced, and with used or new?

What kind of idle issues.... could be a number of things. Check engine light on?? When was last tune up?? Check the easy things first vacuum lines and the intake tube and report back.

No codes. Had an EGR code but they are both new now. Waiting on a new intake tube as we speak. Spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, pcv valve, 02 sensors all new. TPS used, IAC cleaned. Throttle body cleaned. New PCV hose. All associated vaccumm lines for EGR and PAIR are cut and blocked off. I'll list more as I think of it.

Just to get it all out there, how many miles are on the rig?

She's low miles... Only 313k

I'm wanting to do a motor swap but it's just not in the cards right now. I need to make this one last a while.

TPS adjusted to 11%?

Hmm, I honestly don't know. I just put it in the same position as the old one.. I guess I need to download the FSM...

I got the TPS adjusted. It was out pretty far. I poured a bottle of BG44 in the tank and cranked it up. Idle, as of now is much better. It is intermittent though so we'll wait and see. The timing is still bugging me. It's almost adjusted all the way at the top of the slot. I'm wondering if the hesitation and stumble had to do with the TPS, making it seem like the timing was off.... Even when I had it at 6*....

What Jason said. If there is a leak somewhere in the intake the computer will be trying to compensate. It should have thrown a code, but to find out I suggest spraying some starter fluid around the intake with it running and listening for an rpm change. I have a miniature butane soldering pen I use but whatever you have handy. Have a fire extinguisher handy and don't do the test in your garage.

My new intake tube should be here tomorrow. I'll get it installed and see where I stand.

I'm mainly referring to the intake manifold downstream from the throttle body. my number one suspect would be the intake manifold gasket where it mates to the block. Spraying the top will be easy but you'll need to be creative to get the underside.

Oh OK. I'll check that out after work today!

Intake tube won't be here til Monday, but my throttle cable did show up. Too bad it's about 1" to short. So much for trying to save money on aftermarket parts. Seems to be really well made. Oh well. I sprayed as much under the hood as I can to check for vacuum leaks. I can't figure a way to get to a lot of the intake though. I didn't find any leaks yet though.
