Wanted Need help with potential FJ40 purchase

Hello all,

New to these forums and new to cruisers. I have always wanted one and I am considering purchasing the one in the link below.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FJ40-/320964001555?forcev4exp=true#ht_1324wt_1165

I put a small deposit down on it for the seller to hold it until I have a chance to look at it.

Any advice or caveats? What kinds of questions should I ask the seller? What should I be looking for (in terms of potential pitfalls or dealbreakers)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you're paying him $6,000 then the one question I would ask is "Can I have my deposit back?".

I tentatively offered $3500. The tentative part being that there are no major problems or issues not revealed in the for-sale ad.

It would be more helpful for me if I knew why I should "walk away":)

Diamond plate
Body lift
Diamond plate
Floorboard rust
Badly ripped Seats
Mix of parts from many different years
And lastly diamond plate.

Sorry, if I am a total noob here, but how/why should all those things make a potential buyer walk away, rather than issues that would simply lower the offer price on my end.

I would assume diamond plate potentially hides rotted metal. Floorboard rust is an obvious problem. Not sure why a body lift or ripped seats would be a show stopper, but then that's why I am here asking these questions.

So, would you say this cruiser is a decent buy at a certain price point or would you still say to walk away at any price?

Thanks!

That's about a $1,500-$2,000 truck. People do not put body lifts on FJ40's.

Good to know. I guess I was thinking of a suspension lift, not a body lift, for some reason.

So, if you were to buy this it should be for $1500-2000 and the body lift should be removed and the floorpans replaced. I think I am just going to pass rather than try to find someone who knows about fj40s specifically to go and take a look at it person.

Thanks for the help!

Where are you located and what's your budget?

I am in Wisconsin. I have a buddy in the Boston area who has experience with older cars who could potentially go take a look at it. He doesn't have any experience with cruisers, their v8 conversions, or body lifts though. That's why I said I was just going to forget the whole thing.

As far as budget goes, if you are asking me how much I would pay for it, I would pay up to $3500 if it was worth that much. If it's only worth $1500-2000 then budget is really not an issue. I would be using it as a daily driver so I would need it to be viable for that without sinking much money into it post-purchase.

This is the best deal around here...
