All,

I could really use some help. I can't find this in the FSM.

I have oil pouring out from a hole / port / valve in the block. The hole feels like it is threaded but I can't get a good view of it to confirm. It appears that there was a bolt / valve / screw or something in the hole that stopped the oil from leaking.

The hole is located on the engine head / block just forward of the second spark plug and behind the hose that runs from the head / block down to the oil cooler.

I need to identify what it was (plug / bolt / etc.) that used to be in the hole.

Could someone please identify this for me so I can replace it.

Thanks in advance.

Second spark plug? From the front or rear of the engine.

It sounds like the "oil galley plug" which is above cylinder 5 in the head.

If it is that, the hole isn't threaded unless someone has already tried to fix it.

Oil Galley Plug Fixes

You need to fix this immediately, because it will pump all your oil out in just a few moments. Many, many 2Fs and 3FEs have been ruined by this plug failing.

Cruiserdrew,

It is the second plug from the firewall. I'll look into it further, but think you've nailed it. The engine drained of nearly all its oil over the course of about a half-mile drive.

Thank you very much for your help.

Known source of 2/3F series deaths. thread and plug hole. drop pan and a remove a cap or two to check for damage. If the hole is threaded, make sure to clean the threads well and use sealer on the right size threaded plug. If it is not threaded, or the threads are damaged or cut badly, tap it out and get ALL the chips out and set a threaded plug with sealer into it.

That's the one. I had this happen to me about 3 days after I got back from a 1000 mile trip. Fortunately, I was in my neighborhood, and noticed the leak, but I was 3 quarts down in 1/4 mile. This is a critical fix. I used a 8mm x 1.25 plug, but there are other non-metric sizes that work.

This thread was current when mine failed:
Motor spewing oil from "here"... What is it and WHY!!! Arrgh!!!!

It has the drill bit size I use and the tap/plug. I'm still driving that truck so the fix has held.

Good luck.
