I bought another key for my 2006 LC. I bought one with the remote electronics included but, of course uncut.

I followed the steps below to program the remote but can’t get it to work!

(These instruction are different than those already posted in the FAQ section.. they should be for LCs 2003-2006)

My question: Do I need to program the chip/transponder FIRST, before being able to program the remote??

Given that the final step states that you can add multiple remotes at step 6 C, I don’t think it matters that I didn’t use the key/transponder leading up to that step… thus, I don’t think I will have successful after cutting the key and programming the transponder..

The reason I’m asking is because when I use my existing key (with remote), I get it to work! I use that key through all steps and get the car to acknowledge successful programming! When using the other key (not cut so can’t use it to enter the programming mode) at the final steps under 6), I get the feedback that the remote is not accepted (two cycles of unlock/lock of doors instead of one)

I contacted the vendor, and he said “you have to go to the dealership to program the key”..

For Toyota Land Cruiser 2003-2006
(Maybe post to FAQ IF we can figure out how to make it work..)

1. Start with the key out of the ignition, drivers door is open all others closed and
drivers door is unlocked.
2. Perform these steps within 5 seconds.
A. Insert the key into the ignition (Do NOT Turn) Pull key out.
B. Insert the key into the ignition (Do NOT Turn) Pull key out.

3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Close then open the drivers door.
B. Close then open the drivers door.
C. Insert the key into the ignition (Do NOT Turn) Pull key out.

4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Close then open the drivers door.
B. Close then open the drivers door.
C. Insert the key into ignition and leave it in ignition.
D. Close the drivers door.
E. Turn the ignition to ON (Do NOT Start) then back to OFF.
F. Remove the key from the ignition.

5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should lock then unlock automatically
indicating successful entry into programming mode.
Return to step 1 if the locks do not cycle at this point.

6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Press the lock and unlock buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1.5 seconds.
B. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons,
Press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds. Within 3 seconds, the door
locks should lock and then unlock once indicating successful programming. If
the door locks cycle twice, repeat steps A and B in step 6 as the remote was
not accepted.
C. Repeat steps A and B in step 6 for each new remote.

7. Open drivers door.

Thanks, I'll try that then (can't return the key after that, but I would have to take it to the dealer anyway so...).

Do you happen to know where I can find step by step instructions for the transponder? All I have found thus far has been for 99, 00 and 01.

I have found other instructions without the year specified so I'll try those as well...

If I can get it to work, I'll summarize everything to be used by 03+ 100s.

Thanks again,

You need to cut the key and program it's transponder into the system first.

FWIW - for Steps 6A & 6B - try just pressing and immediately releasing the button(s) instead of holding them for 1.5 / 2 seconds. This finally let me program the remote function on my replacement key (albeit this was a 2001)

Thanks for the tip!

I will cut the key today and walk through the transponder steps.. then tackle the remote.

I have an 2006 and thus far I have not read about anyone doing this so... we'll see..

Update..

Not working yet, but I'm determined to find a way and would appreciate input:

First, I used the following steps to program the transponder key:

Add Duplicate Key
1. Simultaneously depress and release brake and accelerator pedals 1 time.
2. Insert existing master key into ignition.
3. Within 15 seconds depress and release accelerator pedal 5 times.
4. Within 20 seconds depress and release the brake pedal 6 times and remove key.
5. Within 10 seconds insert new key into ignition.
6. Within 10 seconds depress and release the accelerator pedal 1 time.
7. After 80 seconds new key is registered and security light goes off.
8. Remove new key and depress and release brake pedal 1 time.

That didn't work!

So, since I think those instruction are for older LC (a 99 LC had success), I browsed for other ways to program the transponder key and found the following:

  • Make sure all windows are rolled up and all doors are shut.
  • From outside the car LOCK the car door with the key.
  • From outside the car UNLOCK the car door with the key.
  • Enter vehicle and close all of the doors and do not lock them.
  • Start the car’s engine.
  • Turn engine off and remove key.
  • Place master key in the ignition lock. .
  • Cycle the ignition cylinder from on to Off 5 (five) times.
  • Open and close the “driver side” door 6 (six) times.
  • Insert new key into ignition cylinder
  • Turn the ignition cylinder ON and leave on for two minutes.
  • Turn ignition cylinder OFF and remove new key
  • Open and close the “driver side” door 1 (one) time.
  • The new key will be registered after 60 seconds (one minute). The THEFT (or security) light on the dashboard will go out indicating that the programming has been completed.
As you can see, very different steps...

So, I was about to try these steps but since you have to use the new key to turn ignition cylinder to ON and since I have yet to cut the key, that will have to be my next step.
(I wanted to first try the programming steps posted in FAQ since you don't need to turn the ignition with the new key, just inserting it which you can do with an uncut key..)

So, while I take the chance to cut the key (and thus not be able to return it for a refund if this doesn't work), I would appreciate ANY input to get this to work!

There is little info for LCs around 2006 for these type of "endeavors" so I want to get this to work and post a summary for steps to take from start to finish.

Thanks!

Nope..

Nope.. Can't get it to work.. I have tried various recommended Vodoo dances and even tried to tweak the steps when in doubt and NOPE! Can't get it to work, can't get the car to accept my new key.

Since my last post, I had the new key cut and it turns all locks. I also confirmed that it has a transponder in it.

One of many ways of doing it, calls for starting the car "with the key"... If that means the new key, the car doesn't start; it just cranks for 10 sec.. (If I try to use the master key for this step, I can't get it to work)

Anyway, thanks for everyone's input, too bad we couldn't make it work on my 2006; I wanted to collect all procedures tried and summarize how to add a key with remote, from start to finish.

Heading to the stealership with my first born..

For 2002+ Toyota, Lexus
Add Duplicate Key
Requires one working Toyota/Lexus Master Key.
1. Make sure all doors and windows are closed.
2. Insert Master key into the ignition cylinder.
3. Cycle the ignition cylinder from On to OFF five times.
4. Open and close the driver side door 6 times.
5. Remove the Master Key and insert the new duplicates key.
6. TURN THE IGNITION CYLINDER ON.
7. The new key will be registered after 60 seconds. The THEFT light on the dashboard will go out, indicating that programming has been completed.

I wouldn't suggest "tweaking" the steps at all, follow them carefully and deliberately. For example - ON does NOT mean start, it just means ON. Sixty seconds does NOT mean "about" a minute. It works.

Maybe you don't have a master key to start with?

Yes, this is one of the procedures I tried (several times) without success.

I confirmed that I had a master key. (If I sit inside the car, turn the alarm on.. the security light goes off immediately when inserting the key into ignition; no delay.

Maybe I have the maximum number of keys stored??

Did you try these steps on a 2006 to be assured that it works?

Thanks!

It works for me

TO PROGRAM LOCK/UNLOCK

1.) Turn Key off..remove key from switch and open drivers door.

2.) Insert key into ignition switch and remove

3.) Lock & unlock power door locks from drivers door switch 5 times @ 1 second intervals.

4.) close & open drivers door

5.) Lock & unlock power door locks from drivers door switch 5 times @ 1 second intervals

6.) Insert Key into ignition switch and turn from lock to on twice and remove key

7.) Door Locks will cycle automatically from lock to unlock twice to confirm program mode has been entered.

8.) Take the first remote, press & hold for 1.5 seconds the unlock and lock buttons simultaneously... and release...then press the lock button and release (quick)...If successful the system will cycle the locks from lock to unlock...

Important-You need to repeat step 8 for each remote you want programmed..when all your remotes are programmed moved to step 9

9.) Insert ignition key and remove to exit programming mode..

My advice is pay attention to the time intervals and don't rush...
ON does NOT mean start

And later TO PROGRAM CAR IMMOBILISER
Some people say that this should clear the ECM of all keys OTHER than the one you just used but for me it worked other way.

7. Do not remove key.
9. After 80 seconds new key is registered and security light goes off.
10. Remove new key and depress and release brake pedal 1 time.

GOOD LUCK

Tom, thanks for sharing the info!

I was told that you need to program the transponder to the ECU first, and then do the remote.

I also tried programming the remote and failed.. the feedback (cycled twice, indicating that it didn't accept the new remote).

When trying to program the transponder, I also tried the steps you provided without luck.

Maybe I have the maximum number of keys programmed already??

I've tried everything and it's time to get abused at the stealership...

Thanks again, appreciate you taking the time!

Yup!

Actually, sitting in the car right now trying it one last time.. no luck!

Actually, now I can't even enter the programming mode for the remote!

Edit: Those steps are to add a key I think... to delete all keys but the master in the ignition should be the following:

1. Simultaneously depress and release brake and accelerator pedals 1 time.
2. Insert existing master key into ignition. Do not turn the key from the OFF (LOCK) position.
3. Within 15 seconds of inserting the key, depress and release the accelerator pedal six times.
4. Within 10 seconds of completing the above step, depress and release the accelerator pedal seven times.
5. The security light will flash, indication all keys other than the one being used have been deleted.
6. Remove the key from the ignition cylinder within ten seconds. It will be the only key still programmed to work

Edit 2: I should add that deleteting all keys didn't work either.. The security light never flashed and my other key still worked...

I have tried for one hour before it started working.

I am currently in the same situation. One little bit of success I have had is that I managed to get the lock unlock buttons to work using the instruction in the first post. I found the instruction in the TSM. I cant seem to get the immobilizer programmed though. In the TSM it covers the programming, but only covers it using the Lexus hand held tester. There are no instructions whatsoever involving rituals like open and close the door 5 times.

This implies to me that for us, the truck has to be brought to the dealer to get the key programmed. Anyone else have experience on this?

For those that have met with success, I have noticed that your trucks are older than 2003.

Not much of an update but..

I managed to get a new key from the online vendor. Tried every Voodo dance known to man, nothing!! Not for the transponder, not for the remote.. Can't even get the locks to cycle on me (indicating that you're in "programming mode".

So, I will take my new key (will same key with new guts) and head to the dealership again.

Btw, one dealership charged $110.. another dealership, 8 miles away, charged $50! Shop around my friends..

ps, I have a -06 LC, tried with one key myself, dealership couldn't get it to work so I asked for a new key (the guts), tried myself again, didn't work, heading to the dealership
