I’m trying to remove the ignition switch housing from the steering column on my 79 FJ40. None of my shop manuals address this task.

This switch has a steering column lock built in.

As you can see from the picture I’ve already removed the steering wheel and turn signal.

There is a split ring in a grove in front of the bearing which I assume I need to remove.

Do I also need to remove the brass colored plate held in place by the three Philips head screws?

Do I need to remove the lock cylinder? If no, do I need to turn the ignition key to a certain position to get the housing off the column?

Is the housing pressed onto the column? If yes, any suggestions on how to get it off without damaging it?

Thanks for your help

The brass plate holds the bearing if I remember correctly.
The split ring has to be removed to pull housing of the shaft.

- After U remove the Top Snap-Ring U should be able to slide with some side to side twisting force and motion By hand the Key Cylinder housing Off the main shaft

- It is NOT Necessary to remove the Three 6mm x 1.0 Phillips head screws & Brass bearing retainer Ring

- If its stubborn and wont budge after that , Use a SOFT rubber mallet and or wooden block & Gently Tap on the bottom to
" Suggest it off "

- Leave the bottom snap -ring ON unless U need it off for some reason

- Prior to re-assemble squeeze the snap ring back to original specs with fingers pressure & polish the steering shaft on a wire wheel for FACTORY Assembly Line easy install with some light coat of oil on shaft to slide bearing races in like Flin ........;)
