Well, my Y-pipe has broken open again on the 80, after one weld and liquid metal patch and then another liquid metal patch . . . and inspection coming due in January, I'm thinking I may have to bite the bullet and replace some exhaust bits.

Of course, in a perfect world (i.e., I had money), I would use this opportunity to install a turbo. :D

But that's not going to happen. So, that being said, anyone have any references for a decent exhaust shop in the Harrisburg/Carlisle area? Any recommendations on hardware? I think I'm going to price out a replacement Toyota downpipe out of curiousity.

Chris--did you say you had some fitment issues with whatever aftermarket downpipe you used?

Thanks!

Brett

Yup chris had some issues with fitment however if you are having a shop do the work the savings might be worth it. And its their problem to make it work. Also we did get chris' together it just was not easy.

P.S. gaskets are not all that cheap.

Jim and I did mine. I wasn't a lot of fun. Plus the company I dealt with was a pia. I believe it was autopartswarehouse.com. If you get the pre cat you should get the after cat as well. They are different sizes than stock. Slightly smaller which is a bonus. Get the gaskets from the dealer. The online ones were horrible.

Thanks for the info, guys!

Anyone else have any words of wisdom regarding shops to do this work?

My advice would be to search in the 80 section and get something made. Most guys use the cat from summit and I don't think it would be very hard for them to make a new y pipe. There must be a mom and pop shop that will do it way cheaper than an oem or even aftermarket system. If you get it done let me know what you did for exhaust hangers.

Yeah, I was looking over there for cat and muffler info. I don't really need to replace everything yet, but I might price it both ways and tuck everything higher.

ive bought replacement exhaust peices from napa in the past, they fit fairly well and the prices werent bad, make sure you get oem toyota gaskets for everything though;)

Thanks to everyone for the advice on gaskets and pipes!

Does anyone have a decent shop to recommend for this work?

Brett,

Don't laugh.... Fully Loaded Automotive- 1215 Roosevelt Ave. York, PA 17404 (717)848-8200 - Contact

If you are willing to come to York, Sean (from Fully Loaded) has a guy working in his shop that is GIFTED in the way of exhaust and can make ANYTHING. The black Mercedes SL600 that is all over his website is my buddy's. He did all the work on his Mercedes custom exhaust and was ridiculously reasonable.... did I mention it is in York, though? Oh yeah... just don't come away lowered 7 inches (probably get rid of your vibes) with 22's.

If you are interested PM me, and I will call over there for you.

Fixed!

Update--I found a shop in Carlisle to fabricate a new upper half of the Y-pipe out of stainless steel. He cut the downpipe below the Y junction and built a new top half with a little more bracing. Pretty reasonable, I thought, compared to some alternatives, and I didn't have to mess with my O2 sensors and cats for now.

The Cruiser is back to running nice and "stealthy" again. One more item to tick off the list. :grinpimp:
