I need to weld some 1/4" stock onto some 16ga sheet. I have a Hobart 140 with gas.

Are there any tricks to get a good weld between the two?

I'm doing a mod to my hitch type bike carrier. My wife has a Townie with a real sharp curve in the crossbars that make putting it on the two tubes that stick out on the carrier near impossible. I'm making a trough for the tires to sit in and need to weld a bracket on to it.

Thanks in advance, and Liam and Mattlock stay out of my thread*.:D

Thanks denis. I report back with the results later.

What Denis said, sort of.

Keep most of the heat in the thicker steel (obviously). Thinner wire will give you more control and probably also help. First time I tried welding thin stuff, it was going horribly until I switched from .035 to .023 wire, made things much more manageable.
