My LC has 170K and it seems to have a leaky valve cover gasket. Can anyone recommend a good independent repair shop in my area?

Dealer charges $800.

Thanks

In San Clemente: Ford | GMC | Toyota | Auto Repair | Car Service at Jay's Car Repair San Clemente, Ca. 92672
We've been going to this guy for over 21 years.
He's honest, fair and reliable.
An example: some years ago, we had him do the scheduled oil/fluid change as he always does on our cars. The owner, Jay was on vacation at the time and his number one was running the shop. He did the scheduled work, except he forgot to fill-out and attach the little vinyl sticker that shows when you're due for you're next service (a lot of shops do that now) and the old one was still on the windshield showing us past due for service. A couple of months later I had to bring in the same car for something minor and unrelated. Jay took care of the issue (I don't even remember what it was at the time) and knowing that we are like clockwork on maintence, went ahead and did our scheduled oil/fluid change for us without asking. When we went to pick up the car he told us about what happened and did not charge us for the service or fluids he used! I was willing to pay for the fluids, but he refused and said it was his fault.

How many of you can say that about your mechanic??;)

In a week or so, he'll be doing my 180,000 mile timing belt and service.

Like I said, he's in San Clemente, but might be worth the drive down the coast.

Far and away the best shop in the South Bay is Bothwell's. They're not Land Cruiser specialists per se but they're off-road and baja racers in their spare time and they have a lot of experience with Land Cruisers. They've worked on my FJZ80 for a decade or more as well as my UJZ100. They did the ARB front bumper, Slee rear bumper and OME lift kit on the 100. They're good guys, reasonable, and extraordinarily honest.

nice I'm going to have to check these guys out, how much do they charge for labor per hour? I need new axles put in and headers install

The toy shop in Hawaiian gardens has been good to my 80 and 100.

Thats right down the street from me (cypress), my cousin has also recommended him. Im going to check him out when i have the time. What kind of work have you had done ( i need my headers put in)?

Cypress or hawaiian gardens not sure. But I have had him do the 90k service, various PM such as repacking bearings, changing all hoses, plugs, wires, electrical, lights, etc. About $4000 on both cruisers. Hes honest, says he can do it if he can. If not says he cant. I would think headers should be no problem....

OK, so I finally got the LC in today to get the VC gaskets replaced. What a great shop, and super honest guys! Gil and Todd were awesome. They not only did the job, but cleaned out the throttle body, and replaced some other parts for no additional charge. Thanks for the recommendation.....nice honest old fashioned repair shop!
