Right. Renewed the tag on the Diesel, and decided to change the custom plate to what it should have read originally. Anyway, I received the new tag in the mail and was wondering would there be a penalty/sanction if I do not turn in the old one. I have a collection of plates in my garage of the states I lived in, and one section of the garage is dedicated to any mechanical work that is within my expertise, and I would like to mount this particular plate on the wall.

I didn't get penalized for not turning mine in.

If you cancel insurance on a vehicle without turning the plate in they can fine you. But if you just change the plate for a custom one I doubt it would raise any flags since the vehicle is still insured.

I have not turned in a few plates, canceled the insurance (car was sold) and have not been fined.

If your insurance coverage lapses then you will be fined - has happened to me...was a careless error on my part when specifying the end date of the previous insurance policy (dumbass move on my part).

When I got my HAM radio plate, I forced my son to go to the DMV and surrender my older plate. He kept insisting it was not necessary, as he had a vanity plate and had gone to the process already. But pigheaded Dad knows best, so he went. They told him there he didnt have to return it, and asked if he wanted to keep the old plate. He said no to keep his maladjusted cantankerous dad from chewing his ass.

Fill out NC-DMV MVA-18A for lost/stolen plate... there is a $50 penalty if you dont... ask me how I know.

Whatever he said. It happened to me and i had to pay it when i renew the plate. If insurance lapses you have to return the tag pay the fine and get a new one. I

They fined me from 3000 miles away when I moved.
