I recently drove my wife's LX at night and discovered the navi background would remain bright rather than turning black. I thought maybe the light sensor wasn't connected or had failed, but the auto headlights seem to work when I pull in the garage on a bright day. Looking at the FSM only showed the auto headlight light sensor and a A/C light sensor. Nor did the multilook display diagrams show any light sensor connecting to it. Does anyone know what makes the navi background turn black at night (which sensor, and where?). Has anyone had this issue before.

In my '05 ES, there is a setting on the NAV that you can override the background setting, force it to stay in "daytime" mode. Maybe it got changed somehow?

It's tied to the dash light dimmer. Play with that knob on the left side of the dash and you'll find it controls the NAV system backlight mode as well.

I suffered the same issue until someone pointed it out to me.

Super90 got it right. The dealer tech said it's linked to the speedometer dimmer switch. If you have it set too bright, the nav won't dim. Ironically, I couldn't find the dimmer in any of the schematics in the electrical FSM, either.
