Hey All,

2016 is almost over and it has been a mixed year. My daughter was born, but my father passed away. I left one job, but got a much better one.

The LC has also been a mix. Bought the LC, but haven't taken it off road yet. Bought new wheels and tires to replace the chrome 20" wheels, but they are still sitting in my garage. Major work was already, done, such as the timing belt, water pump, and shocks, but more baselining was needed. With all of this, I decided to go ahead with the nav to nonnav conversion.

Following the work done by others here, I went ahead and tore apart the wiring. It took a while, but everything worked just fine. Until it get dark....

There are no nighttime running lights on the HVAC controls working. Checked all my wiring, everything seemed good. Fuses all checked out too. Bulbs in the HVAC seem to be fine, but was very difficult to tell if the filaments were busted.

So my question is, can the HVAC controls, dials, switches, and buttons all work if the lights are off? Any other areas I should be looking at?

Thanks all.

Hey all.

I did some digging. I looked at some of the original pictures I had of the HVAC nav controls and noticed that the lights were never on. Only the lights for the indicator buttons and the clock worked. So that is one clue. I also noticed that when I was wiring up the new nonNav controls someone had done a number on the dash wiring, but only to the stereo wiring. I am assuming to either bypass the amp or for some other stereo related reason, but I didn't think this would be an issue until now.

So, is there a common common wire or fuse that provides lighting to the dash, stereo, and HVAC? I know this is the case in the 80 series, but is it also true for the 100? And could the gauge cluster light up without the HVAC?

Just some thoughts while I am driving through the rain on a long trip.

Happy new year all.

On my son's 2000, every one of those lights in the center console were burned out, except for the clock, when we got it.

Maybe these will help, if that is not your issue:

FWIW when I pulled the MFD as part of an android upgrade (still under evaluation...) the lights on all the sound source buttons (AM, FM, Tape & CD) stopped being backlit (they all worked previously) however the buttons still did their thing. something I plan to resolve & will follow this thread

Thanks JLB.

I went back in there today with your diagram, compared it to the one I had for the 2002 LC and noticed that more wires were cut and tapped by the previous owner then what it seems would be something having to do with the stereo. Either way, I have a feeling I am going to be chasing wires for a while.

I have to ask...

It sounded like you were converting a 2002 nav equipped vehicle to a non-nav vehicle

Like redjet in this thread:
Pre 03 Factory NAV to Double Din, Climate Knobs Conversion?

If that is the case, why would the previous owner(s) have been messing around with the (nav) stereo wiring?

Yes. I did what redjet and primeral did. As for the previous owner, I don't know. The car has had two previous owners. All maintenance records, but nothing to indicate anything with the stereo. I know the stock speakers were replaced, and that is only because I took the door panel off to fix the passenger side mirror. I am guessing that either the amp or the speakers or both were busted and replaced (I haven't checked the amp). The stock sound was not good, but I never really cared because I was using Bluetooth speakers for nav and audio from my phone for the time being and I was planning to replace the sound system. Yes, I was cheap, but I cared more about the drivability of the vehicle than the nav, which has been great. Plus, i lost the owners number so I can't call him and ask any longer.

LC is pretty easy to work on compared to other vehicles I have owned, and all I have left is a good cleaning, inner tie rods, and wheel bearings. I would normally just say that it is not worth it, but to find a good, well serviced, and relatively inexpensive LC is hard and I have been enjoying driving this one too much.

Would I like the HVAC lights fixed, yes. But it is not a make or break thing. The LC is too good to not enjoy it.
