Does anyone know who makes the NAV system for the new LC's? I have used this system throughout the east coast and find it lacks flexibility and falls far short of products from Garmin.

I was interested to know if there is an upgrade or patch to allow some modification of routing. Additionally, the lack of ability to change anything while en route is frustrating and almost dangerous.

Comments and Advise please...Thanks

There are many threads already about the lack of functionality of the navigation while driving. All manufactures lockout their navs now.

There is no way to upgrade the nav. You could replace it with another aftermarket unit, but you will loose severe integration with many of the vehicle systems, including the A/C.

Your only option for using the nav while driving is this product:
Prestigious Society - GPS Navigation Override for Lexus and Toyota

Many of us here have it and love it, but you must be aware of how it works. There is another thread on this product already, so I will not elaborate.

Thanks for the feedback here. Do you know which GPS manufacturer Toyota uses for this system?

I have read the other thread here and don't want the overide. I was interested to know if someone has found a way to edit or reroute the choosen route either while driving or prior to the trip.

This system has a knack for sending me on routes that don't make sense...for instance on the way home from Philly to Boston it selected routing that was filled with secondary roads and thus not optimal. I know several routes for this trip, all major highways, and this system kept navigating me back to this route.

I'd like to have some flexibility, like Google Maps and Garmin Systems to edit the route prior to setting out. This gives three options and thats it.

Maybe I should ask...Can you save routes in this system? I know of a tracking function...but can't find snything else.

Thanks

The system is ok. Unless you want to swap the whole unit, get an override. The system has a lot of great info such as closest fast food restaurants, etc. which is useless if you cant use it while driving. If you are in no mans land on a trip, its great.

I looked this up once but can't remember what I did with the info! I remember what I found not being particularly insightful and for my purposes the installed unit became redundant as soon as I required off road maps for outside of the US. It was so much simpler to throw in a Garmin or other device.

I think we have to accept that manufacturers generally cater to customers who require on road city navigation in the US which accounts for the majority of purchasers even for those vehicles somewhat associated with adventurous pursuits. The implication is that your navigation system is probably out of date and cumbersome the day you buy the truck and not easily upgradable.

will LX570 Nav or DVD fit LC 2008?

The LC nav does not cover Alaska because there is no map for Alaska. The Gen 6 system used in the LX570 does have Alaska. Is it a simple case of inserting a lexus DVD into the LC or less simple case of buying a lexus unit and swapping out the LC unit?

I believe the software is Denso. As far as the routing, have you set your preferences up? If it is sending you on secondary roads you may have selected "shortest" instead of "fastest" or "no toll roads" or "no freeways".

Personally I like the aftermarket NAV/DVD radios for the TLC 200 series we get here in the middle east (from china and korea) They usally use the IGO8 maps and some on the market will even allow you to use Garman maps. Plus they allow you to do DVD playback while driving. Only problem is still can not find a version that will work the the models that has the touch screen A/C controls.

I wonder if it's possible to get the A/C controls that come without the NAV package and install any radio you want and not lose A/C functionality.

This is a project I'm undertaking with the 100 series guys. after it's done maybe a 200 series fix is possible.

I did some digging around the Toyota parts databases I could find and it seems that there is only one wiring harness for the 200's dash. To me this suggests that it is possible to do a straight swap to the non-nav hvac controls.

Heads up - I have a prototype unit being overnighted to me to day

- AFTERMARKET nav/dvd/mp3/ipod head unit with the touch screen A/C controls. I should have the unit in 2-3 days and I will post pictures. (This unit uses IGO8 Maps)

Toyota nav sucks. They make everything blacked out when moving, even play lists on your audio! What is that all about? On my Hondas, you can access just about everything even when in motion, including manually inputing letters! It ridiculous for Toyota to have a nanny mentality.

One harness in north america or one harness worldwide?

Idiotic indeed. However, there is an override system you can buy and install. Google Prestigious Society. I installed their unit on my 200 and documented it in a posting currently listed in the stickies on this forum. It's a super easy install.

Of course, I live in Alaska, so my Gen 5 nav system sucks with or without the override.

Actually if you look at the thread about NAV system that is pinned I showed how I manually add a small switch to disable the GPS while moving to allow DVD play back. (don't have to buy some $200 part just $3 at radio shack)

You can throw the switch which cuts the data from the antenna so the car thinks its not moving, do what you want and then throw the switch and the NAV system works again

xkennx,

I could not find the link to the switch mod that you wrote about.

can you provide more info? thanx a bunch, especially if you can save me $197!

I think I read the diagrams wrong. There is one DASH harness, BUT there is a separate harness that plugs into the dash harness that is different for nav and non-nav versions.

In the USA 100 series it's a different dash harness not a local sub harness. That's good news for a 200 owner who might want to ditch the substandard audio/nav.
