For years I have read about attempts to identify and solve what causes the "thunk" on LC's when accelerating from a stop. Earlier this week I had the CV axle and cone replaced on the drivers side of my '98 and.... no more "thunk". I tried all kinds of recommendations to stop the proverbial "thunk" but nothing worked until now. Draw your own conclusions, but I think the mystery has been solved.

I think you are right, my buddy just replaced his a couple weeks ago and the clunk is gone. I pulled mine apart and noticed my splines were about gone as well, the drivers side was the worst. I swapped sides on the drive flange until I can replace them and the cvs, it tightened them up for now but i know it just a matter of time before they strip out!
