Mysterious noise.... care to take a guess?

General consensus is wheel bearing. I just sent an email to Onur requesting estimate on parts. Gonna do a boot kit while it's torn down.

I should have done the new rotors myself 10k miles ago. I gave them a can of M1 grease to use on my job. When I tore down the DS Sunday, the grease inside there did not look like 10,000 mile M1 grease. It was very dark to black. Damn!

Live and learn. I'll try to let you all know how it turns out.

Got my parts ordered yesterday afternoon (Thanks Onur). Ordered a 54mm socket from amazon and ordered a new digital torque wrench from Brownline Metal here on MUD! Hoping all this s**t comes in by Saturday so I can get this done.

I will post my parts list and part numbers when they get here for posterity.:D

I have been fighting this exact same thing in my 2000 LC. So far, I have turned the front discs, replaced all of the front wheel bearings, and pulled out the half-shafts, greased and rebooted. CVs and spindle bearings looked OK. The noise has not gone away. I will be watching to see how it goes for you. I hope that you have better luck than I have had.

Damn.....that's discouraging! If this doesnt fix it on mine, I guess I will drive it till something breaks. Then I will know for sure where the noise is coming from.

My Toyota parts got here yesterday ( thanks Onur!) but my 54mm socket and new torque wrench haven't made it yet. OEM parts for this were very reasonable. I will post a list later.

I'll throw in my two cents. I had two bearings replaced last week (front passenger). Felt like a new truck leaving the dealership, but I developed a grinding sound and vibration on the way home . Took it back to the dealer, they retightened the bearings, I drove about 900 miles over the weekend. Everything was good. I don't know why there was a problem in the first place, but it was one of the master techs doing the work.

But if it is a transfer case bearing or something, it could run into the thousands just for parts. I'm gonna keep looking.

....touché .....

You are correct of course but I am pulling my hair out trying to figure this out. The noise has gotten progressively worse to the point that I know I have got to be doing damage. I have parked it now and am daily driving my 40. Weather here is pleasant now but will not last. 100* days are fast approaching. I am praying new bearings and boots and grease fixes it. I wish Slee was not days away. Just not sure how to find a competent 100 series mechanic local.

I drained and refilled the differentials and the T-case today. The oil that came out was in good shape, without any signs of a trashed bearing or anything. I also lubed the u-joints and slip joints while I was there.

My friend thinks that I should take it to the Toyota dealer, have them diagnose it, say no thanks to the repair, and then do it myself. Like you, I am at my wits end on this.

I did this stuff first. I actually thought it was going to be my front propeller shaft u-joint. I could not get one of them to take grease. It was the one that is between the propeller shaft and the front pinion. I finally had to disconnect it from the yoke and drop it down to get the right angle on the zerk. Then it finally took grease as it was supposed to. There didnt seem to be any extra slop or friction in the u-joint. No change in the noise.

I really thought I could locate the problem area with an infrared thermometer. I thought surely that with the noise I am hearing it would have to be generating heat. I haven't had any luck with that. Have you tried that?

I really ought to put it on jack stands again and put it in gear and let it roll. I did it before but did not have a stethoscope. I couldn't hear anything out of the ordinary with my ear alone. May try again with stethoscope if bearings don't fix it.

I hope this fixes mine. I just appreciate you throwing in your two cents worth. That is why I started this thread. Your comment gives me hope that new bearings and proper preload might fix my noise.

So what did the Toyota Dealer say?

So what did the Toyota Dealer say?

Haven't done it yet.

I did notice something interesting today, though. While driving over a sharp rise in the road, like where weight would be reduced on the front end for a moment, the noise lessened considerably. I'm now thinking spindle bearing. It is all that it could be, since everything else is new. I suppose that it could be a CV, but they all sure looked good when I had it all disassembled.

Fixed!!

Now...... for the rest of the story.

I had time today to take my front driver side hub apart and put in new bearings. I've only driven about 5 miles but it is enough to know its fixed, at least for now.

So far it has new inner and outer bearings and races, new seal, new lock washer, new flange gasket, and new grease. I have a new boot kit to put on as well but I am ordering pfran's clamps before I do the boots.

I also did Landcruiserphil's spindle bushing greasing method demonstrated here: https://forum.ih8mud.com/100-series...te-front-axle-shaft-bushings.html#post6740921

So I am not sure if the new bearings with correct preload did it or greasing the spindle bearing. Either way it is fixed. Thanks to everybody that contributed.

Way to go!

Keep the answers coming if you have suggestions, as we still have a member here that hasn't diagnosed yet.

I am driving a 98 LC Cygnus. I had the same issue as yours with humming sound when driving at speed of 80km/h and above. I noticed that if I change the gear to Neutral at high speed driving, the sound went off and come back when in 'D' mode. The sound is coming from the front too.

Does your car has humming sound when you change to Neutral while driving at high speed too?
