I went to see 2 cruisers yesterday. I had already seen the burgundy one in Frederick Md and my mechanic vetoed it because of the thud in the differential.
LC #2 . I went to see this one about a month ago. It is a 2003. I have been waiting in the mean time for my mechanic to find the time to go back with me. We get to the lot. The guys wife is using the car. It is maryland inspected and he says he has fixed the muffler and replaced the Oxygen sensor. Now my issues with the car were a) the steerring didnt telescope.... (I read the threads on that already) b) the driver seat adjustment knobs are all broken off ( all the adjustments work... but it is just the stems where the handles should be) and c) on the back door... where the latch is to open the door, before I found the latch I felt a roughness ... like it was rust on the bottom edge of the door. No major things but then I discovered that the 2004 has the back up camera. I once backed up over a dog... camera might be useful.
Now let me say this before I make comments on LC#3. I have known my mechanic for 32-33 years now, since I was a kid. He taught me to drive trucks and stick shifts. I have put dents in 2 or 3 of his cars. He flew from the east coast to the west coast to be in my wedding. Over the course of the last 10 years he has loaned me at least 3 cars for indefinite periods of time, cause I needed a car and didnt have the cash to get one.
Also, and here is the kicker... he bought an Acura once, sight un seen, turns out it had been in water and in the end he had to replace the engine, the tranny and a lot of the wiring harness.
LC #3... has been in water. IT came from NY. It has a salvage title. It has amazingly low mileage. The listing says "has been in fresh water, but shows no signs of interior water damage, all electronics work, no dashboard lights are on, no signs of rust, no mold or mildew. " We get to the car. Brake light is on. He asked dealer...blank look. SO he tries to put the car into gear... nothing. He does it several times... then he tells me... if you put a car into gear it should roll. By itself. You shouldn't have to press the gas to get it to move. Reverse... same thing. Car goes into gear smoothly but it wont move. So then he goes under the hood. All fluids have been changed. All the belts and hoses are in good shape. Then he looks at the bottom of the engine at the frame. Rust. Looks at the bolt heads on the bottom of the engine. Rust. Above a certain level there are no signs of rust...but below... there are. He spent awhile at the rear looking for smoke from the exhaust. None. We played with all the electronics and lights... they worked. The ad does say that it has rear seat entertainment... I didnt see it.
Now on thursday we are going to look at both cars again. Mechanic is bring tools and a jack. Among other things he is going to pull the rear wheels and look at the brakes for rust and take a closer look at the frame.
The cruiser in NJ ... I am almost ready to give up on because of the bumper situation.
Now quick question. The seat heaters in #3 car did turn on. I felt warmth. When I turned on the seat heaters in car #2... after awhile I had to turn it off cause I got to hot. Just wondering if that could be a problem.
Merry Christmas everyone!

. And we know 100's better than any mechanic, including those at the dealer. They just don't see enough of them to know what to look for.
