Well after selling the 8N I needed a new tractor. After reading all kinds of forums, talking with a bunch of folks, and reviewing posts on various makes, I decided to get a Yanmar, which is a Japanese version of the John Deere. Yanmar made the power train for John Deere from the early 80's to early 00's. It is an incredibly durable tractor, tough as nails. The one I picked out is a Yanmar FX24D. It is a 28HP w/ 24 PTO HP, 4WD, power shift, power steering, and a 3 cylinder diesel. It had about 974 hours on it when I got it and I’ve put about 7 hours on it. I got a new Koyker front end loader, new 5’ king kutter shredder, and a new 5’ box blade. I’ve worked it hard so far and it has run like a top. It starts right up every time.

... good choice! I have several friends with Yanmar products and hear nothing but good feedback on them.......

Just curious, how much was the basic tractor, not including the add ons?

And did you buy new or used. If used how many hours on it?

The basic tractor was $6000. The Koyker FEL was $3000, the box blade was $340 and the shredder was $700. I priced a John Deere and would have spend probably another 4k or so for the Green deere.

This tractor was used with about 975 hours on it, so just barely broken in. These tractors can give you 10,000 hours with the right TLC, kind of like a landcruiser.

The only word of caution on these is to make sure you buy from a reputable dealer. Some of these tractors are taken from Japan to Vietnam and "refurbished". They are basically piecemealed back together and a large majority of these have pretty substantial problems.

This one was not a refurb. The refurbs will roll the hours back to zero and call it good. The paint may look good on these and the price is usually a little cheaper, but buyer beware, you get what you pay for.

You have a good machine. I know Yanmar from their marine diesels which were very sturdy and competitvely priced. Keep an eye on the hydraulics. The asians seem to undersize their cyllinders and bend lines too sharp for my sense.

All compact tractors sold in the USA are foreign made nowadays regarless of the name and paint color. The only benefit of buying a Deere is to access their parts chain and warranty if new.

I went with Kukje, a Korean tractor manufacturer that uses the Cummins B3.3 four cylinder. Their US partners named them "Branson" tractors for some obscure reason. Personally, I would prefer a more colorful name; e.g. "Hercules", "Red Mule", "Mighty Max", etc.

Here is a pic:

Looks like you have Top-n'-Tilt installed but not hooked up for some reason.

Get that T n'T working and be happy!

after moving from an old david brown to a new kubota, I can relate to your recent upgrade...

you won't be disappointed with the Yanmar, my F-I-L is very happy with his...

When you say Top n Tilt, what are you refering to? Are you talking about the hydraulics on the 3 point that tilt blade / mower left or right? If so, it is hooked up and works like a charm!

If not, then what?

That is the top and tilt.

My tractor lingo is not up to date. After seeing what a top and tilt is, mine is hooked up. It makes it really easy to use and very handy when using a box blade.

I've been running 5310 JD's on my farm for some time now. They are Yanmar powered and I've never had a bit of engine trouble. One of them has nearly 7000 hours and is still running strong! Yanmar is a great product.

Battle -

Comments like that is what made me decide on a Yanmar. I'd love to go green eventually, but for recreational use, the Yanmar fits the bill.

Yep, Your crappy picture made me think that there were no lines to the R/H cylinder. Sorry, your mistake :)

Lavarock,
Mahindra would make a good choice. They're solid and well built but most important if you want to do excavation is that they're HEAVY in compact tractor comparisons.

I just bought a new Kubota B7800 with loader and backhoe and am already regretting the choice in some ways mainly to do with Kubota being about the lightest brand available. I know they're topnotch in reliability (and in price), and I wanted a machine small enough to manuever in my untouched rough wooded back five acres, but damn does digging with the hoe make me feel like I'm on a rocket launch! Even with the rears loaded I'm jumping one or the other of the stabilizers up off the ground with a full 16" bucket. So I keep thinking that for digging I shoulda' bought more lead in the ass. I was of a mind that you can always ADD weight but it's hard to take weight OFF. Now I need it.

Kubotas make great lawnmowers but less great diggers.

you bought a B7800 - not a true backhoe...if you don't want to be rocking, time to go buy a Case 580.

I contemplating getting the backhoe attachement to my L3240, but for $6K or $7k, I can sell my old backhoe and buy a little newer one.

Or maybe you should be looking at a big trackhoe:

I'd like to have a Case 580 but can't justify it. I'd probly turn this pretty green treed spot into a dirt parking lot with one of those, or have to go buy vacant land just to play with that digger. Like a big sandbox. :)

The BH on mine is Kubota's BH75 that mounts to a factory subframe, not to the 3PH. It works pretty good for what it is, but I know that ALL of the compacts are like toys compared to moneymaking machines like the 580.
