For a house or garage, I think I would put an open roof on top. But I want to do water catching and solar, so a giant suspended roof would be cool - concerned about high winds.

The boxes would still need insulation all over inside, though.

For Sarah if she hasn't seen it - this one is in Savannah:

I looked into the containers a bit a couple of years back when I was buying one for storage. My focus was on how they are used and the pitfalls and costs. In the long run they are a bit cheaper than conventional construction but not enough that I would choose that route personally. There are issues regarding condensation that bothered me as well.

I think for non traditional building spaces they are up there on the cool scale for sure. I was interested in using them on a hill property, basing a 2 40' units on the ground on the uphill side and a 20' unit on the downhill side, allowing parking under the "bridge" and all mechanicals in the 20' unit below. Just getting a crane to where I was thinking is an issue just for starters. But in the end, dollar for dollar I would rather spend a little more and not have all the compromises container buildings bring with them.

Here is the concept in a VERY rough drawing :)

  • Two 40' sides and one 20' in the middle in the back
  • Cantilevered roof connected

Julio garcia’s is one of my faborite designs. Super simple. Add elevation and a second storry under one unit. Easily manipulated.

Two 20’ high cubes and a set of roof trusses in between the two gets you two secure storage sheds and a great multi use covered space ......

Jason - Heather (and you and others) have "talked me down" from the crazy idea for the Rosemary House - - however, we are still interested in a container home or container garage if we find the right piece of land as a second residence and VRBO.

As far as the existing shed - we are going to dig out the back -mud has filled up over the foundation and I think that is causing my water issues.

Having most of my adult life living in one of those cans I can say this. It beats living in a tent. If no building materials and logistics constrains exist then these things are great.
But if u don’t have building constrains I would not use these.

I usually place them in a u shape. 3 cans or 6 cans. The cans are part of the footings or support for the roof. The cans open up in the middle and the area under the roof becomes a common area. With gravel or concrete flooring.

I have built that configuration in numerous fire bases in s***ty locations I have deployed to.

I will count this as as "no" vote :)

How about as a pool though?
