Now that I have it in my possession, title and all, I can share completely what I've got myself into.

As I mentioned in the other thread, seeing and talking with Jason put me over the edge. It started with getting a chance to really look over Darin's at the Uwharrie event and I couldn't shake it from my head. I was determined to find a 55 as a replacement for my 40 when it sold. Yet, as I kept looking, I also searched for 45's to see what was out there and how much. I really didn't want to spend more than $5k and as I'm sure most would guess, finding one for that price would be a very rough example of a 45.

Then I posted a purposeful "whine" in the 45 section to see what I could kick up in the way of unadvertised 45's. It worked and I got a handful of them to look at. Unfortunately, most were in the $12-18K price range with one at $5k but very far away (MT). It was something I considered until Jason shared his other find during his search.

Pics looked fair, price was a bit more than I wanted to spend but being that it was closer, shipping/pick up was much easier/cheaper and it was in much better overall shape. Still keeping it a "secret" (whatever that means around here), before I sent the deposit, the owner called and said he had an offer from FL where the potential buyer was ready to fly up, pick it up and drive it home.

Without hesitation, though I probably got played, I Paypal'd a deposit and I was locked in. Then the post to see if I could scrounge up a co-pilot to pick it up. Regina about sh!t a brick at first sight (on-line) but has now changed her tune seeing it live. She giggled (probably nervous, fear of death kind of giggle) all the way to Ramon & Emma's house but straightened up when a Wake County sheriff pulled up next to us and it dawned on her that we had no plates/registration/insurance. He continued on, thankfully. And, now we are pretty much up to date.

'77 FJ45 with a 2F, 4 speed tranny and split t-case out of an 85 FJ60, Detroit locker up front (not sure if its the "lunchbox" detroit or not) and an Aussie for the rear (to be installed), rear full-floater axle (PO said he put 60 birfs front and rear also), 40 steelies with BFG AT's, 33 X 9.50, fresh fiberglass top and some rust here and there. Found the side steps and bikini top in the bed tool box.

Well, more here than there. All lights work, heater works, shifts fine, runs fine, steers fine, brakes need fluid/bleeding but stop fine, some rust here and there. Still got to do a real hard inspection, do some PM and check out all the basics but so far so good. Pretty relieved buying it sight unseen other than the 15 or so pictures Jason shared.

And, I've really got to thank Jason for his referral and being helpful to me getting another 45 into our club. He also referred me to Uship.com where the same guy picked up and delivered mine as did his. Pretty good member I'd say, despite what all you guys say about him.;)

I know, shut up Jerry and just post the pics. All the pics I took this morning documenting its present state can be found on my photobucket site at:

Day 1 pictures by mtbcoach - Photobucket

But, here are the highlights since I don't want to show all the work I have ahead of myself. There will be plenty of rust clean up, the bed is in need of a complete rebuild but the tub is in fair shape and a very good base to work from...

There you have it, as can be seen, plenty of work ahead of me. Yet, this is one project I'm very happy to take on, totally psyched to get this thing into a trail ready rig that can be driven to the trailhead also...

Congrats Jerry

Lots of work for sure.

Only thing that looks really problematic is the amount of frame rust. Can't really tell from the pics though just how bad it is.

congrats!

Thanks Del.

I went out with hammer, punch and wire brush in hand to see how deep the rust is on the frame.

I couldn't find any soft spots or punch through any metal on the frame or cross-members. I started on one spot of the cowl as a test patch and I can see what I'll be doing for the next few weeks/months to get it cleaned up...

For beign a Land Cruiser and a Northern Truck it could have been a lot worse. I think you may find more rust in the body and frame then you see right now. Basing this on the blue pine cones :D.

You are going to have a good time with that. Knowing the work you do it will be all tip top shape in no time.

Blue pine cones, pine needles, light bulb...he didn't clear much out when he painted it. All that was done when he replaced the front floor boards and patched up the truck bed. I'm pretty much resigned to be building a new bed and storing this one in the event I try to restore it.

Just remember that I've got a tubing bender and I'm not afraid to use it...:D

Has had some patch work where the rear springs attach to the frame. Might want to look really close at the frame.

I gave the frame a real hard look and don't know why what was done. There is some boxed in sections up front near the crossmember, which is from a 60 (assuming due to the split t-case). And, those spring hangers are kind of sloppy IMHO. Not sure if it was due to damage or the installed springs. I'll have to measure the eye-eye of the springs to see what they are.

I plan on stripping the frame down as best I can short of removing everything, unless its so bad that I have to. The parts I hit with the wire brush cleaned up nicely with solid metal under all the crap. Regardless, no doubt I'll give it a very close inspection as I get things cleaned up under there...

Awesome Jerry! I know it's gonna be a lot of work, but 45's just peg the cool-meter. What are your plans for it? Full resto? Just make it nice enough to be a driver? Wheelin' rig?

Thanks Allen.

Plans for it? That all depends on which brain I have in my head at the moment. One side says to restore it like Darin's, can't imagine I could find the patience to go as far as Barry did. Both are beautiful examples of the FJ45 heritage.

The other brain says to 4 link it, bob the rear, put some 80 axles under it w/5.29's and ARB lockers, throw some 40" Swampers on it, put a diesel in it and wheel the crap out of it.

In reality, I'm going to stifle the rust as much as I can while I mull over the options. At least, I'd like to be able to drive it to DA and to Uwharrie, OBX or even Harlan for a day or two of fun. As it sits now, the drive train and axles are strong and with some cosmetics, it will be a good daily driver and work well off-road as is. I can't wait to get some decent weather, take the top off, put the windshield down and eat some bugs.

I'm so psyched to have it, I just plan on driving it and enjoying all the looks and questions like when I first got the FJC...

I am by no means an expert on the 40/45 Series, but after seeing this yesterday Jerry I am convinced you have a very solid foundation for whatever you decide to do. I look forward to following along!

Looks likea good project Jerry. I am sure that you will find a happy medium on the direction of the build. I was in the shop earlier "trying" to work but it is just too damn cold for the heater to keep up with while cold air blows in under the truck. God I cant wait to move :)

Thanks Joe, I'm happy with what I've got, now the fun begins...

Thanks Stan. I'm with you there. I was just heading out to see if I could find something for my garage. It is f'n cold out right now, thats for sure...

very cool rig mister
cant wait to see what becomes of it and the direction the build goes.

ONSC.....slowly but surely rescuing cruisers from the clutches of the salt belt

Thanks Jason. Wouldn't be if not for you, I owe you.

Pretty stoked with it though I'll become a master of rust removal/patching when all is said and done...

Ya'll getting cold in your garages ?

What is that nonsense ?

Got a nice new heater in mine. Got to have it cycle or it gets too hot. Went and got 2 8ft workbenches now also.

Jerry, might send you a picture of where i need you to take a pic of and see what they did for hooking that bumper to the frame there.

Yeah, I've got to find something for sure.

I'll go take some better pics of that area, its pretty straight forward from what I recall...

At least you had four walls and a roof, beats removing a tranny out in the cold in asheville today (did I mention it was also on the top of the mountain)....cold as hell!!!! when I left it was 18 degrees.
