My New Dog, What Is It?

If he is Pomeranian, he must have got the brains and manners from the Lhasa. It is really early to tell, but he seems smart as hell and very attentive/eager to please. At 11 weeks he obeys "No" and will come when you call him, always watching too, never lets me out of his sight.
He's got his chin resting on my foot as I type this.

The rescue's vet thinks he will grow to be about 25lbs.

Another thing, when I adopted my dumpster dog, the Rescue people told me that it was a Catahoula Leopard Hound.... a rather large, unruly, very loyal dog with a merle coat bred for Boar hunting and cattle herding..... which top out at 100lbs.

I was fairly certain that it was a Blue Heeler.... a medium, unruly, very loyal dog with a merle coat bred for cattle herding, but often used for Frisbee fetching... which top out at about 45 lbs.

I was right. She's a Heeler. So, don't put too much stock into what they tell you it is or half is, as the case may be.

Thanks Jason.:flipoff2:

As you guys post stuff I look them up to find out more, thanks.

I just saw that Pomeranians only get to be 3-7 pounds (now that is just bait) This little guy is already up to that, and Lhasa's only get to 10-15 pounds, sooooo his daddy must have been a big boy.
(meaning not a pomeranian, thats all that matters to me:D )

However, Chow Chow's are 45-75lbs??? There is no way 75lbs could breed 15lbs without crushing it. Unless she liked to be on top:doh:

how sure are you that it is 11 weeks old? Just asking. I am not sure what it could be, I think a Chow is out. You think Pomeranian is out. I think the tail and 'fro resemble both. Nothing else comes to mind that would resemble it. But with a Lhaso Apso effin with the gene pool, I really have no idea.... Good luck with it and check in with updated pics as the pup matures... then it may become more evident....

EDIT: Jman beat me to it.

Aw, a nephew for Fanger! (Winkie)

Watch your mouth there young 'un, your Momma is reading this!

Take a long hard look at that expression. Looks like them chickens is up to somethin, Mrs. Tweedy! That puppy has a cunning side. Part fox. maybe?

GOM and Mum

funny to read all the responses..

And yes alot of the folks at a shelter are dumb as rocks some times. My friends wife runs a shelter. Another friend of mine has a pure yellow lab and she questioned whether it was pure saying it looks like it has hound it in because it was long. WTF she knew it had papers too.

He's a keeper, that's what he is.

Better keep him inside... my :princess: is reading over my shoulder and she's headed for the car on the way to VT...

That could be damn near anything. If it is 11 weeks, should top out at about 20-30lbs. Hard to tell without seeing it in person. I think you have good un. Keep us updated with pics.
Cheers,
Sean

11 weeks for sure, that and a lhasa mom are the only things I know for sure.

Pops, fox is interesting. He has a familiar gait and expression that I can not place, a sort of "always looking over his shoulder" that is reminiscent of the steady wary gait of a fox.....hummmm.......

I think he may be any kind of Spitz type dog, they come in a variety of sizes that could explain the breeding.
It is also important to think that the father could already be a messed up mutt as well.
It's like 10 degrees out here so house breaking is a pain, I stand there shivering and he doesn't seem to mind the cold at all. Another mark for him being part Spitz.

I like the little guy, he's staying. Just can't wait to figure out what he is. :)

Kevin, I am seeing some Aussie Shepherd in that muzzle, eyes, and ears. Definitely consistent with loyal and attentive behavior. Certainly possible that poppa was a mix, too (ACD and Aus Shep?).
Regardless, if you give him as much attention in training as you give to Cruiser maintenance, he'll be a great dog.

And by the way, there's NO WAY Amy's gonna let you take him back.

Ahhhh!!! Those pics are awesome. Nice job. A keeper!

Update, What is he?

AWSOME! Thats what he is.

He climbed his first Adirondack high peak last weekend, which he now thinks he owns. Climbed up rocks, jumped obstacles, climbed ladders (yup, I said ladders) and balanced on log bridges. He did great. Every photo from our trip has him in it. (some have the cruiser as well)

Still no clue as to what his heritage is, but there is definitely Chow in there. We met a Chow that was a bigger version of what our little guy looked like before we cut 6 inches of his hair off.

Here is a pic of Tubby on top of his new mountain.
Thanks for all the feedback guys,
Kevin R.
