hey all

just got a nice old rusty 85 fj60 and it's making a funny noise. ok, it's not really funny. it's of a squealy high pitched variety.

def coming from around the front of the engine compartment, it appears when the revs exceed about 1500rpm and is consistent (as it it never goes away).

it seems to be coming from either the alt or power steering pump, hard to really figure out.

I tried adjusting the belt, spraying water on it while running and no change.

one thing that is different than the other 60 I got is that the metal cap to the power streering pump doesn't really lock down tight at all. it's on there, but it's loose enough to dance around a little while it runs. there seems to be plenty of fluid in there.

also, I have read that a similar type of whining noise can be the fuel pump, but this cruiser has a 12v electric fuel pump in line just after the fuel filter so I don't think it's that, plus it really sounds like it's from around the alt or PS pump.

any thoughts would be most appreciated!

cheers

Grab a large long screwdriver and use it as a stethascope. By placing the flat end on the alt and then the ps pump and putting your ear to the other end you will be able to isolate the sound and figure out exactly where it is or isnt comming from.

nice tip, I will try that right now.

just to confirm my lack of knowledge, it such a type of noise the type of thing that could come from either of those components?

ok, so the screwdriver bit was kinda hard to tell ( I got bad ears) but with a piece of hose it was pretty definitly the PS pump. fwiw it's covered in 23 years of leaked fluid and dirt so I guess it's time for a new one?

thanks for the help.

cheers!
