Hello all.

I just put my deposit down on a 1979 FJ40. Its not PS or AC but its had some nice body work done and fresh paint etc etc etc.

So I guess my question is what should I know about 79? Sounds like from what I have been reading that there were some changes between 78 and 79. Like the 2F motor is a easy set up for PS and AC and what not.

Anything else that I should know. Motor is stock and has a 4 speed of course. Would like to put a 5 in someday but I want to live with it for a bit first.

Thanks

Don't tell me it is mustarad yellow.
I have a German 79 Mustarad Yellow.
It came with,
Drums brakes on the 4 wheels.
Same size front hubs as disc brake front axles hubs.
Diesel with 5 sp, but the PO changed it to gas with 4 sp,(DUM or what) .Maybe it was a B not a 3B.
3.7 GR great on the highway.
Rounded Bazel, ( not sure that is original, I have seen 2 more German 79s with rounded bazels )
Gas tank under the P seat. ( Very sure that is original
Hood Insulator mat holers installed in the hood. (not sure about that too)
It had a couple of German ad ons.
Like Uro trailer hitch.
Rubber covers for the hood hinges.
Currently, I am using doors and a 1/2 top from a 74 on her.
Here is a pic, maybe I can engourage you to post some of yours.

nice rig. love the old style hard top too. I have mustard but the red is such a solid color on cruisers.

That top is from a E>'74.................at least in the US.?????

Agreed. The top for that guy is def. 74 or earlier. Doors as well. You are gonna have some bondo in it more than likely. Just an FYI.

I've had lots of 79's, my current 40 is a 1980, which is virtually identical, and they're great rigs, especially if there's some highway work involved. Nice looking truck, early top no big deal, but not correct for your model (should have panel rear doors). Look for rust in the floor in both front and rear. Nice find!

You guys

crack me up. But thats why I am here. Its cool you can tell that about the top from a few pics.

I know some body work has been done however the rust has been replaced with new metal. So I am not to worried about that. Would like to have the right doors on the back but for the $ and location it was the best deal I could fine.

Now I am dreaming of what to do with it first. I am thinking PS but if I ever want to change over to a V-8 am I shooting myself in the foot by doing that?

Thanks
