I started looking around at LC's about two months ago and ran accross this site. I've spent literally 20 plus hours doing research, deciding on the best rig for my budget. I was caught going back and forth between a 95-97 low mileage 80 or a 98-99 higher mileage 100. That's about what I could afford with my budget.
I just bought a 98 LC with 102k on it. Orignal owner, all service records at the local toyota dealership, 90k service completed this year. It came with all the options, locker, etc... and a full set of studded nokians on extra rims. Totally clean in and out for $15,500.
I'll post some pics when I get the chance, just wanted to say thank you for the great site. Also, do you think I got a good deal?
I've ran three tanks through it now and was somewhat suprised to find myself only getting 12.5 miles to the gallon. Granted I have the studs on which are a bit larger tire and I haven't switched over to synthetic yet...hope that will help.

That is the one consistent complaint you will find on the LC...the gas mileage. Mine...fully loaded...gets 13.5mpg for all-around mpg. I can get about 1mpg better on highway at 65mph or 3.5mpg less if off-roading in LR. When it was totally stock I got a little over 15mpg all around.

Welcome to the board! Yup, your mileage sounds like it's at the lower end of the normal range. That range to me, just based on what gets posted is a low of 12 and a high of 17 for unmodified 100's. I get 15-17mpg, and am tickled. I run full synthetic oil, premium gas, and put injector cleaner through periodically. I'm not saying you're gonna get a huge jump if you do that but my 100 likes the combination; especially the full synthetic oil.

Also, check the air cleaner yourself to make sure it is clean. Some places will get that with a service, some will not. It varies from dealer to dealer and mechanic to mechanic.

Sounds like you got a great deal to me. I'm a new 100 series owner myself, picked up a 98 with all options, locker, etc like you for 14.2K. It had 108K on it though and needed the 90K service (which cost me a little under $400 in parts to do). I also didn't get a full set of spare rims/tires.

I've got almost 112K on it now and have been averaging about 15-16 mpg all-around. We just did a 1600 mile round-trip over the holiday and averaged a little over 16 mpg with cruise set to 80 mph. If its kept around 70-75, it will get into the 17's. This is all stock though.

Congrats and welcome! Looking forward to the pix.

I'm on the very low end of what I've read being normal for mpg. I've ran the premium and just put in an air cleaner. Next I'll try some FI cleaner and switching over to synthetics. Not really that big of deal to me as long as the poor gas mileage isn't covering up some other problem I should be looking into?

Only thing wrong with this rig after putting about 700 miles on it since I got it is the heat sheild rattle. AFter a two minute search on this forum I noticed that others have had similar problems. I printed out the 20 minute quick fix and plan to get it taken care of this weekend. Gotta love that...

Welcome to the forum!

Toyota recommends the spark plugs be changed at 120k miles so that isn't part of the 90k service. New plugs could improve gas mileage. Go back with the iridiums from Denso or NGK at about $10 a plug. While changing the plugs, this is a good time to do a compression check, or just wait and see if it uses any oil.

Congrats, and show us the pics man...
