I did this in my Jetta with good results and thought I would try it in the 80. So after checking all the tires I filled up with gas. All week I did
* Not let the RPMs get over 3k when starting off from a light.
* I set the cruise control on 60
* No AC in the morning. AC coming back from work

I got 17.5 MPG at 342 miles on 1 tank. Like the saying goes, "Slow down, you're already in Austin." :)

Jeff, I routinely use the same procedures you describe when driving our 80 and average 17-18 mpg, sometimes as much as 20 mpg on road trips. When the wife drives it, which is most of the time, she's lucky to squeeze out 13 mpg. She denies that there's any difference in our driving styles, yet has no explanation for the 30+% improvement in fuel economy when I drive. :hmm:

Interesting. I think I might try this too just for kicks. I'll be amazed if I can break 13mpg with all the additional weight on my truck.

Unfortunately this only works for the later model 80's with the A343F transmission, I tried the same with mine (A442F) and only saw 13MPG :(

Tucker

Just curious - why would the transmission make a difference?

mark did you get your 3fe rewired? is so is there a link to the job? jim in spicewood

just drove 4 adults + luggage + 2lbs of Kreutz's bbq to Houston for the Red Sox game. Drove the 80 with 35" M/Ts between 75 and 80 mph and got 11.9 mpg. Not exactly hypermiling...
