Hello,

This problem used to only show up if the truck had been sitting for a few weeks but now I've noticed that even if I've been driving it a few hours prior it often does nothing the first 4-5 times I turn the key but eventually cranks and fires up. In searching I've seen mentions that make me think this is not a totally uncommon behavior, but I didnt see anything indicating what might be the underlying cause. I've had the battery tested, its about 6 months old. Are there any fairly easy potential remedies I should be trying outside of cleaning/securing cables, etc? If this the sign of a starter in it's way out? I have 239K miles.

Thanks for the assistance.

Go to a local auto parts store and get your starter tested. They can tell you if it needs replacing (for free) in a matter of mins.

Sounds like the solenoid contacts to me. I bet whoever put it together put them in crooked. This is a pretty big job. If you decide to replace the whole starter be sure to pop the cover off the solenoid and Make sure the contacts are in there straight. When I bought my 1999 I had this issue. When I got to the starter it had a rebuilt for Toyota by Denso sticker, and the contacts were in there at an angle resulting in them wearing out quickly. I popes new contacts in and it was good to go.
