My inexpensive snorkel buildup - Added more pics!

Hello guys,

After desiring so much a working snorkel for my 40 series and after figuring out that Zekester's snorkel was too cumbersome to have shipped to me (I live in Central America) I figured out my own version of it. I have posted a few very small pics due to space limitations.

I did this setup early April right before a trip to the Honduran Moskitia, anticipating the need for it.

I started with a pre-cleaner from enginaire (Home) that I got from ebay for about 10$, then got some bent pipes from Donaldson and a few brackets to mount it.

I will post more pics as space permits... hope you enjoy it.

Here are a few more for your enjoyment!

First, a pic of some of the parts needed, then a pic of the hole for the air filter done in an angle...

Every once in a while I come across those at the junk yards, I will keep my eyes open for them :)

I would have driven one down : )

Looks good, you may have to seal the slip joints, and the shield should fold down, on mine I keep the snorkle intake at the top loose enough to slide it off, so i can fold the glass down...

looks great! How does it affect your left side view? ty

Its there, Ive gotten used to it (been driving it for about 8 months now.) Not too bad though. One thing I have really noticed is how much cleaner my air filter is now. The pre cleaner and height difference make a big diff here where there is lots of dirt/debris everywhere. I was changing air filter every 15k kms bec by that time it was useless, now I just hit 15k after the install and the filter looks kind like it looked after 5k kms before.

Also, I never take the cab off. Maybe you have noticed, I have a Pick up cab adapted on to my SWB 40 series. Im attaching a few extra pics so you can see a front angle pic where you can tell the snorkel would interfere with the windshield.

regards

looks good...

one question... how did you seal the two pieces of pipe that slot into each other?

and have you noticed more fuel consumption than normal...

i put an arb snorkel on my 40 from a YJ and have noticed a bit more fuel consumption with an increase in power ... even with the Q78s on there...

just comparing to see if you have experienced an increase in power too... thinking about putting a snorkel on the bj60

very cool setup on a very cool rig. what's the outside diameter of that precleaner?

The precleaner is 4" wide. The pipe is 3", so I ended up using a reducing insert from here: Reducing Inserts: Intake Hoses, IntakeTubing, and Intake Clamps

I didn't do much for sealing the joint, for the stainless steel joiner does a very good job of tightening them. I have not been in a situation where the rig is completely submerged that deep, under such circumstances I may find some water filtering, but most of the rivers I need to cross are about 3 to 4 ft deep and occasionally a hole 5 ft deep so it doesn't get submerged long enough for water to come in (at least so far).

With regards to fuel consumption, I don't have any accurate measure, for at the same time I did this mod, I also went from 32" tires to 33" tires, so I have noticed increased fuel consumption. To me, the greatest advantage is cleaner air to breath! I attribute it to the precleaner, even though it looks so ugly :)
