A couple weeks back, I posted about having the undercarriage of my '03 LC sandblasted and painted with an epoxy paint. Several of you replied with warnings about the harshness of sandblasting so I heeded your advice. I reached out the to Mudder who referred me to the sandblaster and he did say that the blaster nicked a brake line and gas tank seam so he had to repair those, but he was still very satisfied and would do it again.
I figured I could always do the sandblasting next year so I scheduled an appointment with Krown at Davis Auto in White River Junction, VT. I've DIY'ed fluid film over the last couple of years, but I knew that I wasn't getting into all the nooks and crannies that I wanted to.
The only downside was the 2 hour drive, but I scheduled it on a Monday and we were at peak foliage so I just set the cruise and enjoyed the ride. Davis Auto appears to be a family run small repair shop in rural VT that sells cars, fixes cars, details cars, rents Uhauls, and applies Krown. They spray the Krown in a 2 bay garage across the street. They let me ride along to watch and document the process.
Once on the lift, Randy proceeded to drill holes in the bottom of the doors and tail gate. He asked me if it was okay, and I told him to do whatever he needed to do give me the best protection.
He then uses a long thin wand about 4 ft in length to spray the Krown inside all of the door cavities. Once he's done, he hammers the right size rubber plug into the hole.
Then he switches to a smaller wand with a 45 degree bend at the top to hit areas in the engine bay and undercarriage.
Finally, he finishes with a wide spray nozzle and goes over the entire undercarriage.
He told me that Krown uses a base of corn oil. It didn't have any odor and applied in a mist. It went on clear, but seemed to turn black when in contact with surface rust. It dripped for quite a while and I'm glad to have had the 2 hour drive home to let it further seep out.
It took him about an hour and a half and they charged me $129.95 and gave me a $10 coupon for next year. They also said if I referred anyone, they would give them $10 off now. PM me if you're interested and I'll send you the coupon.
Overall, I was very happy with the service and I hope an annual application of this will keep my rig's condition where it is today for years to come.
