So I'm cruising along around 30 in 2WD wondering about all the weird sounds the 60 makes when its cold :bang: Then I hear a bang, the rear wheels lock and I skid off the road onto the shoulder. I start playing with the transfer case, shifting into reverse, etc. Now the truck will not come out of 4WD and drives a bit wonky.

My theory is that something broke/seized somewhere in the rear wheel drive chain and then freed up after I stopped. I'm guessing that I now have Front wheel drive only. Is it OK to drive it daintily like this?

I plan to put the truck on a friends lift tomorrow and see what wheels turn and look for anything obvious. I'm assuming its the t-case but I guess it could be the rear diff as well.

If anyone has some troubleshooting steps for this I would be grateful, I haven't found a thread yet in the 60 section.

"Happy" Friday,

Harry

I'd start with the rear diff. Sounds like you broke a ring and pinion. Usually if something fails in the t-case bad enough to lock the wheels the case gets a hole in it. The truck is heavy enough to push broken stuff through the t-case. Pulling the rear diff cover is also easier than pulling the t-case apart.

UPDATE:

So the rear output shaft of the transfer case was all crunchy feeling/sounding according to the interesting mechanic I took it to for diagnosis. I have limped it to another mechanic, purchased an awesomely priced replacement tranny/tcase (thanks to gorgor) and am almost ready for the operation.

Is it worth spending the money ($110 new or less maybe used) to put in a known good 4WD sensor? I am definitely going to get a new OEM reverse sensor.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Harry

Anyone better than me at searching the forums? Am told there are a few posts (but I can't find them) on the tcase switchover in 85 that now has me dumbfounded. "New" tcase/tranny is 4 inches short. Think things can be split and mated but am confused on the bolt pattern difference and some other stuff. Would love a comprehensive explanation of what needs to happen. Doesn't help that its all sitting in mechanic's field so I can't see it easily. Arrrrghhhh....

Sometime in 85, the transmission had a spacer added to the rear to make it match the length of an H55 (about 4"). The transfer case should be the same except the latter ones had a 38 mm shaft= more desirable (early ones had a 34)

I think that Jay Dufault (Jay Dufe) here on the board has a tranny and split case he might be willing to sell. Not sure if its the longer one but it might be.
