I hear you. My buddy Kelly's rig looks pretty cool with black rims though.

Now that my kitchen remodel is underway, I can dedicate some time to my 40. I finally pulled the fuel tank to see what was hindering the gas flow. Man, it was a royal pain in the butt getting the cover and tank off.

I drained the fuel that was left over after siphoning and then filled the tank with water and shook the hell out of the fuel tank. I ended up finding a couple of damn oak leaves :(

I also figured out why my fuel sending unit wasn't working correctly. The arm was flipped over on the opposite side it was supposed to be on. I also now have pretty good flow. I can see fuel going into the filter now.

No drain one the bottom of the tank?

Yes, there is one but it makes a mess. I siphoned the fuel out of the hole for the sending unit. Pretty easy that way.

Good job David. Glad you didn't try draining like I did. I had gas down my back and in my ear :). I want to know who put the oak leaves in.

Ouch. I've had gasoline in my ear before. Freaking painful!

I had the tank stored outside under my covered patio. The wind must have blown them into one of the large openings.

Are you guys with clear fuel filters getting a ton of flow through them? I seem to get a little and am now wondering if the fuel pump might be bad. It's new OEM.

Here's a gratuitous beer and cruiser pic.

David, I recently did new fuel lines and 2 filters and only when I changed my fuel pump did the gas flow correctly. I have an old pump if you need to try it. Also some of the newer fuel pumps don't use spacers to engine block but you knew that I'm sure.

Good luck and awesome build - setting the standard for the rest of us!

Might take you up on it if you're old pump still works.

I was looking at Roger's @Racer65 website and he has two fuel pumps. The one that's on my truck he has listed for 10/77 to 12/78 trucks. Mine is a 7/77. Looking at both pumps, it looks like the only difference is the inlet hose barb. Are there other differences?

9/77 and earlier pump:

Mines the later one bottom picture. In CA so can't check my research until end of week.

There is no difference other than the inlet fixture. The transition month can be a little fuzzy. I would go with what you see on your truck.

David,
Great looking cruiser!
Uugh, the Commander told me that he wondered how long it would take you to find those leaves, just did not what he was talking about!

Ha. Yeah, it probably was him since he's helped me move the big heavy parts on more than one occasion.
