Hey,

I'm putting a 1UZ VVTi and a 5 speed hilux gearbox into my 45. I want to give it a 2 inch body lift.
So i have a couple of questions.
I need to swap over to disc brakes is there a conversion kit for this at all, if so is there any mods that need to be done?
Will the 2 inch lift give me any grief with the the steering column to the steering box? Also i am looking at getting a power steering box what is the best choice and what is involved in the swap??

Cheers any help would be much appreciated.
I have attached some photos from when i first did the original motor rebuild. motor1.webp

what yr 45 (looks like a late model.)

Disc...most people in the states use a Yota mini truck

and also commonly used is a 60 series PS box

Cheers

45

If I were you (my 10 cents worth) I would find a salvage yard or someone who is parting out a 45 with a front axle with disc brakes. Just as long as it is in or the around the same as yours, (gears to match rear). In Australia you guys have 45's all over. Should be no problem. This is a unbolt and install deal, much easier.
Same for the power steering. Toyota made a pretty good unit, just as long as the tires are not the size of a earth mover they last a good while.
I, myself suggest re arcing the springs if you just want to lift it 2". Make sure that you check the shackles when done to make sure you do not have a negative angle. You do not want them locking under when you hit a rut.
2" should not affect much in the steering or the drive line (s), brake lines and so on. If you go more than that you will need to start to focusing on those ares for mods.
As In2cruisers asked what year is it?

Disc brake conversion can sourced out with 40,60 or 70 series (All direct bolt up)
Power steering goes to 60,70 or 80 series (as long as the pitman arm is facing forward ) will be easiest mod and as factory.:o

Cheers for the reply everyone!

Have gone out and found a 5 speed gearbox and transfer, 4 pot disc brakes for the front end and took the whole steering column and power steering box from different 60 series laying around the wreckers.
Photos soon to come :)

Disc brake conversion

Rightio,
The first part is easy, Take off the free wheeling hubs remove cir-clip undo both ajusting axel nuts aswell as the locking washer and claw washer and you have the external part of you drum off.:)
About 20 miutes of work each side, nothing to difficult but do need a special tool for your ajusting axel nuts. I will also add that a cordless rattle gun is the way to go:D

As you can see on mine not even the spiders were scared of my brakes....... The scarey part is that i was driving this just days before we started :o

From there undo the 8 bolts on the inside of the drum brake the circles around the axel an you are now down to just the swivel hubs.

To take the swivel hub completely off you need to undo th bolts at the back of the swivel hub that holds the hub seal kit together as well as the 4 nuts on top and the bottom which holds your steering knuckle arm and your top and bottom king pin bearings.

After that you can just pull out the axel.

I purchased the swivel hubs including calipers for $385 for the pair from a wreckers
Got new bearings, king pins, and seals including inner axel seals.

WOW! Looks like real business here!
All pretty straight forward installations! Box and disc brake except the power steering, will definitely need some attentions on PS conversion. The 60 series will have a bigger hole in the tie end rod than the 40 series. Most importantly is the locality of the PS box.:D

Good luck!

Cleaning everything was a pain in th ass!!! seen as the swivel hubs were from the wreckers and i was doing a complete swap all the paper seals had to be chiseled off, all the greece had to be water blasted off about 1 ton of degreeser was used in the cleaning of all of the bits and pieces. all the cleaning was VERY time consuming.

We removed the old Races from the rotors as we are putting a new bearing kit in.

Here i would like to Note 40 series and 45 series bearing kits, king pin bearings, seal kits all work on the 60 series front discs.
The swivel hubs are similar but not exactly the same, the knuckle steering arm vary on the 40 seires, the mount onto the swivel hubs are all smaller holes then the 60 series, but on the end of the arm the 40 series can come in both a smaller and a larger hole. The 60 series has a larger hole on the end of the arm aswell as onto the swivel hub.

The reason for the full swivel hub swap is because i am also changing the power steering to 60 seiries i will also use 60 series tie rod ends, tie rods (drag links, steering rods) they are a stronger unit then the 40 and 45 series.

What is required to achieve this, the chassis on the 60 series is wider so the tie rods need to be cut shorter and re-thread which isn't to difficult to measure but measure twice cut once!!!

Needed to pack the CV joint (axel knuckle) with greese then aswell as greese the outside of the axel.

Also had to pack the bearings with greese.......This is a time filled job if you dont have the right equipment (which we didn't) so it had to be done by hand.

Big thing to remember here....when putting the axel in try not to have all its weight slide along the inner axel seal.

You can actually find a 70 series tie rod and drag links for the PS conversion, 70 series drag links need some adjustment of the tie end and of the same length with the 40 series. That's it. Cheers!;)

Cheers for that just one question?

I have already got the 60 series TRE Kit will that work with the 70 series tie rod and drag link?

Cheers

I used a complete set of 75 series tie rods and ends, it's easy.
