I read on here that newer Toyota’s have Apple CarPlay, which is exciting because I don’t like the entune system very much.

Has anyone tried installing an Apple CarPlay unit?

I did a search but the results were old, plus, the forum would be boring if everyone just says “use the search bar!” It would be a ghost town. We’re a community, not a book.

No, it wouldn’t be a ghost town. Search would work even better. People would see tons of discussion on previous issues if they searched, and add new elements to those conversations as things come up instead of asking the same question that had been asked dozens of times before, and likely still not getting the full depth of conversation on a topic.

You’d also see detailed explanations into why what happens in other Toyota’s isn’t necessarily compatible with your entune, and why toyota doesn’t even put it in 2021 cruisers.

I’m sorry I was just being sarcastic, but you’re right. Last topic I saw on search was in 2016 and was wondering if there was any vendor out there or a new member who has had success in this topic.

Do you have experience replacing the infotainment system on your LC? If so, which one do you recommend? Thanks!

There is a huge thread (or two) about doing it in 2016+ models and I’m pretty sure questions came up in at least one of them about 13-15MY.. might be worth digging around in there. I didn’t pay a ton of attention, but I’m pretty sure it was asked. I did find it interesting that seemingly well thought-out systems are being developed to solve this problem.

I haven’t replaced my system, partly because I wouldn’t use CarPlay/android auto anyway, but also because I’m adamant about keeping toyota build quality for these expensive & complex systems. Most of these aftermarket additions just aren’t to that level of build quality, but I understand people’s desire for them.

I wouldn’t mind it so much if it wasn’t so laggy. Also, the controls are clunky and unintuitive. Plus, I’m an Appleholic and really like it when everything integrates seamlessly. I just wish the infotainment system wasn’t the central brain of everything like the AC, door locks, etc., so it could be as easy to replace as my 93 Corolla! Lol!

Wow! I think this is exactly what I’m looking for! The one for the Land Cruiser says plug and play with no additional wiring needed. I’ll send them an email to get more information. I wish it were apple play, but beggars can’t be choosers. I’m sure it will be a helluva lot smoother than the current entune system.

Thanks again!

This is the best option I’ve found, but it sounds like you need to be moderately tech savvy, not just plug and play and not cheap.

If you get an Android based system that doesn’t include CarPlay, take a look at the CarLinkIt product that’s designed to add CarPlay to Android based units. It plugs into a USB port on the Android device and has a companion Android app that you install (side load) to interface with it. We discussed it a bit in the older EC Offroad thread and found it to work really well. It supports wired and wireless CarPlay and wired Android Auto.
