The system runs at a constant psi with the which is regulated by the fuel pressure regulator on the right side of the fuel rail next to the injectors. The pump runs when the key is cycled to bring it up to pressure, then shuts off when the ECU does not see any RPM. If the engine is running, the pump will run at one speed and shut off when the ignition is turned off. Pressure should be 38-44 PSI with the vacuum hose disconnected to the regulator at idle, and 28-34 PSI with the hose connected at idle. These are USA specs for gasoline engines ("petrol" for our Aussie and Oz brothers) as per factory service manual.
Remember that USA models have a emergency shut off for the fuel system under the dash on the left side of the console area. It is a shock/roll over type shut off called the "FUEL CONTROL SWITCH". It has a yellow reset button on it to push if it trips. This will take out the fuel circuit and kill the pump in case of an accident.
