My new to me 04 TLC came with nearly new Michelin Pilot XLT's. Recept from Costco says $1000. But I love my Revos on my 80. Should I dump these and get some Revos for the 100. Of course my 80 has 16's with the D rated Revos and the 100 would be 275/65/18 with higher load rating than the XLT but not a D series tire. The 100 will see snow and occational dirt road. For those who have this tire please chim in!

The other choice would be Toyo open country.

If it's gonna stay on the pavement I'd keep brand new pilots. You won't get any money for them most likely. Love my Revo's though. :D

IMO, set a price on the existing tires and put them in the SALE corner....if they go, then you know you are stuck buying new ones....

I'm the same way, and am notorious for taking off a perfectly good set of tires cause I want something else...have a set of 39.5 IROK's on 17" beadlocks sitting in the shop, run 3 times offroad, sitting for almost 2 years....

Well I am going to need snow tires so why not just get Revo's.
I will order them next week and put the Michelins up for sale.

I just swapped out my dad's stock 18s w/ factory tires for factory 16s w/ 285/75 16 Revo's. The difference was quite noticeable. The stance is much better, but the ride is degraded IMO. Now, I have a feeling that is largely attributable to the 16 vs 18 wheel size. The tire "squirm" is really bad compared to stock, but the truck still drives great compared to my 80. Since he's only planning to run the Revo's for winter/wheelin tires and swap back to the stock wheels/tires for the rest of the time, we felt this change was warranted.

BTW, I am a HUGE fan of Revo's, I'm on my second set on the 80 and obviously loved them enough to get my dad to get a set. Just pointing out the finer points of the differences.

YMMV

I love my Revos but the LTX is a great tire ....

... for snow and the occasional gravel road I think I would stick with the LTX. Reviewers at the Tirerack like them even in the snow.

In a year or so with the truck you will have a lot better idea of what you want/need out of the truck so there is no down side to waiting.

I like the Revos but also consider the Nitto Terragrapler that comes in a 285/65-18 which is slightly larger than the REVO's. Nitto is made by Toyo. The Nitto rated better than the Revo on consumer reports for snow traction but their results aren't always accurate.

The Toyo OC AT comes in a 275/70-18 (33.2") but keep in mind it is an E Load tire and might ride harsher than you'd prefer.

My E load-rated Revos do ride stiffer than the C-rated marshmallows I replaced.

I wouldn't hold the high CR ratings against the Nittos. ;) If I were buying again I would consider them too.

fwiw, my wife claims that she only gets about 270 miles to the tank now with the 285 TGrapplers vs 300 with the street Dueler or whatever they were...

10%!

  • Weight
  • Rolling resistance
Decreased ...
  • mechanical advantage from stopped
  • indicated milage on odometer (-6%)

= 4% actual decreased fuel economy. Just about right!

Did your wife notice that the tires actually decreased the length of her commute ? ;)

yes, true, the 6% is there too... forgot about that... better!

Hmm, I'd never considered the "tire-squirm" issue before. I'm thinking of upsizing to 285s on my '00, but I drive a fair amount on twisty mountain roads. Anyone else have bad experiences with larger size tires degrading handling? Can this be solved by going to a higher load rating? (E vs C or D?)

I have them on my 80 and for highway I pump them up to 45+ and they feel great, better than the OEM Michelin's. On the gravel I put them down to 30. But at 30-35 lbs. on the highway they squirm.
