From reading the manual I see you can use either CDs or DVDs:
  • Manual doesn't notate more than 1 disc, so assuming single disc
  • If you want a Music DVD, is there a particular format required or do you fill the DVD with MP3's. One stereo I have requires you to load an after market product to build a catalog

For USBs, is there a limitation on Memory size. I figured out on my previous BMW Z4 that 32M was the max and that is why it wouldnt' work

Any particular formats for music files on the USB or just loaded up with MP3's

Searched but it didn't find anything to specifically address these questions. Search does fail sometimes :D

You need to download and search the manual for the NAV/head unit from Toyota's website or read the hard copy. Most of what you're looking for is in there. For example.....it says the player may have trouble reading DVD-RW discs. It's does say it reads CD-RW DISCS with MP3's on them and goes in to detail how deep folder wise they can read. Hope that helps.

Thanks. I read through the manual before I posted. I saw the folder section, but it didnt say the MP3s have to cataloged with a folder level. In my BMW I just put all the Music on a stick at the same level and plugged it in. On a Pioneer radio in my 40 it requires a freeware program to provide a catalog mapping to the songs. The Manual does not specify max size for the USB. I will work through it and post the answers.

Ok, answers to my questions

I made a Music DVD that plays in DVD players and it did not recognize any music files

I made two USBs with identical data

64GB said no music files

32GB worked perfectly

The BMW I had would not recognize anything over 32GB. I did not find this info in the manual

Did you get any videos to work from thumb drive or just music? I couldn't get any videos as Toyota is using some outdated codec, so I am playing through the phone

I didn't try any videos. Maybe a project for another day. Tomorrow I may install the ARB Outback drawers I took out of my 100

I was wondering why I was hearing the same songs over and over. The USB has a limitation of 255 songs per folder, I had 1300 songs at the same level. Searching other Toyota forums I found this to be a common issue and here are the limitations, or rather the way you want to set this up for up to 10,000 songs

USB memory:
Maximum number of folder in device: 3000

Maximum number of files in one folder: 255
Maximum number of files in device: 9999

I have an old 80gb iPod connected via USB. Most of my songs are lossless mp3s.
The radio and blue sound like crap compared to the CD quality of the iPod.
The worst part of the system is searching. It's super slow and there's no way to scroll by letter. It's one of the worst systems I've found except for BMW. BUT it sounds pretty good. Not better than the other cars though.

Mine sounded great off a memory stick. I reworked it into multiple folders and we see how it works

With my '15 LX, I'm using a 128GB usb jump drive without any issues. 320kbps encoded MP3s sound great (better than xm-sirius ;)). I've organized the folders by artist and then their sub folder by album. The system is able to successfully categorize the artist and albums for listening. The only downfall that I've found in this configuration is 'rand'om does not play across the entire music library of the jump drive but only the selected album of that particular artist.

I still need to play with this. I have not plugged anything into my USB yet, but since tonight I am planning on driving NW on a camping trip, it may be time. For the most part, I have been using bluetooth with my cell phone.

I was playing with CDRs since our newly acquired RX-300 does not support anything outside of disks, cassette, and radio. The CDRs (negative type) read great in the LX and RX!

Just curious, but if you placed all of the song files into the root: 1 - will they all be recognized? 2 - Can you randomize them like this?

That works but will only play what is in 1-255, the rest get ignored. That is what started this for me. I moved the songs into folders. If set to normal it will play the entire folder and then move to the next folder. Setting to random doesn't seem to work between folders. This is a bit annoying. The BMW I had never had this limitation.

I have a bit of an eclectic taste in music and like to mix it up a bit. I am now wondering if I should set up "mixes" in separate folders, maximizing the 255 songs per folder and then just have it read from one folder to the next. (thinking aloud)

@Romer - I've been trying to get my USB flash drive to be recognized, but it does not seem to recognize the format = FAT32. Any ideas?

Oh, and 2 folders, named "Mix1" and "Mix2"; files are MP3.

How big is it, like mentioned in an earlier post the 6$GB drive wouldnt work

8 GB, so much smaller than 64.

I'm reformatting the drive now to make sure that it is indeed FAT32... which is what it said it was in Windows.

No dice on that drive (brand new too). Trying a different drive now...

Ok, so interesting enough... the second drive worked... weird. The first one was brand new too... works fine on my laptop... guess I am moving work files around and swapping drives!
