It looks like the mid-section muffler (main one?) is gone - makes a loud noise when car starts up. I was under the car and it looks broken - and rusty.

I got Platinum warranty transferred from the PO. It looks like Toyota should put a new muffler in under extended warranty.

Did anybody have any grief from them in similar situation?

I recently had a run-in with the wonderfull warranty company; I have the Platinum warranty, exhaust components are NOT covered under the warranty because they are not considered "mechanical".

I think I'm going to throw a rod and get a new motor...

yeah i got burnt on that warrenty also extended warrenties are a waste of money. look how many companies are selling them on tv now a days. obviously there is good money in them.

Cory,

I went through the list myself - it is on the back of the warranty booklet. It does not explicitly state that muffler is excluded. At the same time muffler is rusted. I guess it will be a fight to pick up. I will post the details after the dust settles.

Took the car to the dealer. Tech writer tells me - it will be $1200 as they need to change exhaust from muffler all the way to the back. I tell him - call Toyota Platinum warranty and have them pay for it. If they will not cover - my next call it to regional manager. He tells me that the regional manager will not do anything.

Tech Writer calls Toyota - first phrase - "I have a muffler rusted - you do not cover it, right?" I almost flipped! Why are you putting words in their mouth. Guy on the other end of the phone listens, gets the part numbers and authorisez the repair.

At the end I get new exhaust system all the way to the back of the car, not just a muffler.

I will need to check to make sure that heat shields are in place. Could not tell for sure at first sight. This dealership is sloppy and I will try to avoid them at all cost.

By the way Borla cat-back would cost $730 at Amazon plus $150 to install.

Bottom line - Platinum warranty from Toyota is worth it. I got it transferred from previous owner. But it seems to be a bargain at $700. And I never thought that I would advicate for extended warranty.

I also think that they messed up on exclusions. Exhaust system is not excluded - and only damage to it could be caused by rust - hence rust exclusion should not apply. I am not a lawyer - but it seems like they musy cover exhaust.
